Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

My boots give me sore ankles

As an impoverished student I bought some second hand boots cheaply and have used them on several trips but they have this annoying pressure point on the inside of my ankle which always gets sore after a couple of hours skiing. On a multi-day trip I have to put plasters on my ankle to protect it. Hired boots don't do that and I usually find them more comfortable.
Is there any way to make my boots fit better without spending hundreds of pounds, or are they just the wrong shape for my feet?

They might just be too big, and moving around too much. If you've never had trouble with hired boots it's unlikely you have particularly prominent ankle bones (my brother in law does, and he got the shells of the boots deformed for him, by a ski shop in France).

Might be best to go back to hiring boots - they're not too expensive (well, not compared to beer and lift passes).

iMacThere4iAm, depends on what is causing the problem... an unstable foot needs support so a basic off the shelf insole may help, if it is a prominent ankle bone then the boot can be stretched out over that area (£15-30 depending on if one, 2 or how much)
