Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Cheap Wax iron

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,

I've kind of messed up my timings and now I need a waxing iron in the next 2.5 weeks......
The only 2 I can get where I live nice and quickly are a Swix and a Vola one
Swix T77 - http://www.swixsport.com/Products/Wax-Tuning/Tuning-Equipment/Waxing-Irons/T77-Waxing-Iron-Economy-220V2
Vola http://www.vola.fr/eng/sports/product/travel-wax-iron/187.html

Any opinions on either? Or in this price range does it really not matter too much?

Thanks

No idea about the Swix but the Vola does a good enough job, temperature control is quite good

@fredbob, in future if you ask for help regarding supply that you posted your location (or had it in your public profile). The bulk of snowHeads members are UK residents, so by default UK residence is a reasonable assumption. I had dug out a link to the Piste Office for you - realised I'd wasted my time when I saw your last post.

Honestly, a cheap iron from Argos or whatever is the Spanish equivalent will do the job. Just don't iron clothes after.

@achilles, he said this in his first post -

And he wasn't asking where he could buy irons, he has two picked out and asked for advice on which one to buy

@fredbob, I think you'll get the same woth Swix and Vola, I've used both and they serve their purpose. Two reliable brands

@moseyp, they said that they thought were the only two irons available. It did not follow as the night the day that that was so. @ski, offered an alternative; I was about to. You may think us both morons. However, I do think in threads like this sHs seeking information can help us help them if they say where they are based. Smile

@achilles, but he didn't say anything like that? And I didn't call you a moron what are you talking about....however I do think it's a bit unfriendly and aggressive to reply with this when he didn't even ask for new suggestions

@thecramps, ....only up to a point Lord Copper.

I used a cheap iron for two years. Cheap thermostat meant either lots of smoke (very bad for lungs) or poor performance (low temp). All cheap irons tend to swing from too hot to too cold and back. Cheap plastic lead. Nasty - but entirely typical of cheap travel irons.

It cost 15 gbp.

So I bought a 30 gbp Toko 850 dedicated wax iron and have never looked back, over hundreds of hours of use. No smoking, good temp control, nice heavy base, great performance.

I wasted 15 gbp. I should never have bought the cheap iron.

Drop Jon Coster an email. A decent iron will arrive in the post a few days later.

I know about Jon, I bought the basic tuning kit from him, very nice indeed!! and was planning on getting an iron locally due to postage weight and the time now

The cheapest normal iron I've seen near me is 25€ so I'd rather get a basic proper ski iron for 40€

 You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
I recently got a Vola iron in a kit from Glisshop, it was reduced and the site also had a voucher code attached.
Coupled with coupons from a ski purchace last year I thought it was a good deal.

I recently bought a Demon ski waxing iron from atbshop.co.uk for £28.95 (£32.45 with shipping).

I've not used it yet, but it's small and specifically for waxing skis, so should be fine.

@fredbob,
My Vola is model ref 012017 and shows a tick against 230V AC /1000W 50Hz on the box . There is another 120V AC/800W 50Hz version provided for on the box.
Hope this helps

+1 on this...

I managed to put a nice big bubble on the base of a ski because of this... it takes a while to get used to the huge temp swings and I can get away with it now. That was a £10 non-steam iron (bally hard to get hold of now too)

I'm now avoiding the whole messy affair by getting into touring and not caring about the state of my bases Laughing

@valais2, all likely true Mr Boot, but in a hurry, as implied in OP, any old iron would do.

@thecramps, er...OP says 2.5 weeks ... re mail that's enough to get something sent around the world and back. And also they say 'what do you think of these specialist irons which I can get quickly?'

Answer still stands - what I think of them is that THEY ARE A LOT BETTER THAN A PIECE OF CHEAP @£$^@

@thecramps, ...it's nothing to do with Rule 1...see QRZBuddha

There are loads of people on the web arguing that 'it's fine to use a cheap old travelling iron'. Look, I have used that kind of thing on many occasions. But is it worth spending an extra 20 gbp.
Without any question, YES.

I have a VOLA t40b and its fine for a cheaper model and is pretty stable for temperature. Would recommend.
