In terms of clothing, boots and many other things I'm often able to use kids' stuff.
I'm about 9 1/2 stone and 5 ft 4-5", female and 'maturing', with small feet. According to specs I'm well within the weight limits for 'junior' race and SL skis, some of which seem pretty high spec in terms of construction (and some, admittedly, not).
If I wanted a pair for recreational/practice/non-race use, is there any reason why I shouldn't get a pair?
Fundamentally, both 2nd hand and new they're more easily available and cheaper.

The kids of your weight/size at our club aren't paying any less than adults for their full spec skis. Which skis in particular are you looking at?

@Grizzler, with your stats I can't really see a problem if you get the right spec ski i.e. a full on adolescent race ski. I'm smaller than you but used junior FIS GS skis 175cm 21m and 23m for Eurotest training. I'm pretty strong but certainly did not overpower the skis which were still relatively stiff skis with high DIN bindings. A lot of the kids who race are way taller and heavier than me and still on junior kit.

Seconded. I borrowed a pair of teens FIS GS skis at 182cm and 27m radius. No way could I overpower those things, they railed with precision and didn't really pop you out of turns until you were doing fairly high speeds.

@altis, Good point, worth checking. I am currently in low volume adult boots (just) but presume with my tiny feet that they wouldn't be that much different to a teenager's, especially as many would have feet longer and 'wider' than mine. I have been told that I might be best in a junior race boot anyway!
@snowdave, There seem to be a lot of 2nd hand junior skis going on auction and specialist shops, some with not much use on them, but I've also seem new Atomic (e.g. Redster varieties) and Elan SL and other race, plus other makes in various places (been doing far too much Googling!) going for a lot less than what even 2nd hand adult ones are, and at sizes between short and 150+. I will caveat that by saying that I don't know how well they compare in terms of construction specs, and suspect that they may be a little less Ti'd, less wood, more composite etc (or maybe not - I haven't checked) - but for what I am looking for, that might not be an issue.

@juliad, @Scarpa, I am actually looking at SL skis. Can't seem to find any adult SL-type skis (or high end performance, definite short radius) going at sensible prices in my size, new or 2nd hand: but there's a fair few 150s in Junior makes (but seem good specs, FIS, wood/Ti/carbon cores etc).
My chin height standing in slippers is 147cm, 150cm is to bottom of nose and I currently ski an old piste carver (not super stiff, cap construction) at 152 (11.2m). So I reckon that a Junior 150 wouldn't be too silly - but am open to others' thoughts...

Don't see any reason why you couldn't ski on junior race skis if you have the technique.
We've got a couple of pairs of kids race skis in the garage (only 130-140) and they are much heavier and stronger construction than most adult recreational skis - they wouldn't be easily overpowered.

Yes, I know the boot, I think. And I'm with the delicate heel, 100%.
Only trouble is, I think that most junior boots stop at about 90 flex, and I'm advised to have more than that (although, frankly, I don't know if I really always want or need it). How does she find it? Can it/has it been adjusted for a stronger adult flex?

@Grizzler, By definition, a 150cm SL ski is not FIS spec. You are in the normal height and weight range for 155cm ones.

But I don't need FIS spec (might try one but not racing and certainly not exactly FIS standard skier! ) I wish!
155 certainly would be fine, but since they don't do that in junior skis, and the question was about getting a pair of junior ones because they seem easy and pretty cheap to get old of at the moment to test, play around with etc (I've skied 144s before, now 152s)...?

Last March we hired some Salomon NFX junior skis in 150cm length for my 12 year old son which he liked so much we bought them from the hire stock as they removed the week's hire charged in the deal.
Interestingly as they had a big range of adjustment on the bindings I fitted them for me for an afternoon to see what they were like. I'm 6ft and 90kgs wearing ski gear. They were fine for me although a bit too much friction to glide really well as you'd expect being that they were overloaded.
I'm certainly not advocating them for my use but to illustrate that when way out of their range they didn't really have any problems in coping with what I asked of them.
Based on that I can't see you'd face any problems doing what you ask in the range you're talking about.
I'd go for the ones you feel would give you what you need.

Right at the moment, TBH, given that it's hard to test stuff, I'm going for anything which comes up at a cheap enough price whilst in good enough condition. If I acquire a few which don't suit me then at least I've learnt how to tell. I've never skied anything in a full race spec ski, junior or otherwise, so it's a bit of a learning experience all round, and an exploration of where my skills and abilities are as well as what type of ski I like in terms of stiffness (etc). I know that I don't like a lot of softer or female-orientated skis, so let's go to another exteme (if it's not costing me too much). I know that I used to have a lot of fun on very short R10m skis, so let's see how I adapt back to them (maybe they'll feel horrible now) - especially as I've also got rather longer brand new AMs to get used to this coming season .

I bought Head WC Rebels junior skis in 156 for use on the dry slope, which were recommended by our local ski shop as a viable, and cheaper, alternative to the adult version. Quite a few people at the club use them. I'm 5'9" and approx 72 kgs and find them plenty stiff enough and brilliant fun on the dry slope.

@Zorrac, Thanks. If I was looking for GS, would be tempting. But I'm wanting SL.. (hence short & short radius)

@Grizzler, I know of some Atomic FIS race 158cm SL skis for sale inc bindings, hardly been used. They may be a bit stiffer than what you are looking for though.

@Scarpa, Hmm, tempting. Probably a bit long, too (?) What radius will they be? But by all means PM me with details, etc. May be worth a go if price is right. Thanks.

@Grizzler, I just asked about them and they are a full on adult FIS race ski, very stiff and not forgiving at all. Radius probably around 11.5m.

@Scarpa, Would be interesting. Probably a bit stupid: but interesting (might find out what I was really born for ) At least it'd show up and force me to improve my many technical failings!
Not out of the question if just for a try and play, if the price is right. If you or they want to PM me and discuss festive birds, please do.

@Grizzler, Will check out the price. Just note though that the binding's lowest setting is DIN 10 so these would probably need to be replaced unless you are skiing very strongly. It's possible a shop may trade in a second hand lower DIN race binding for an almost new one and remount at minimal cost. We are in Austria (Ski Amade region).

@Grizzler, If you want some FIS SL skis then I would go for 155cm ones.
|
|
|
|
|
|
@rjs, If I was competing then certainly (if not ideally maybe even a little less - but wouldn't get those in FIS I assume). But does 2cm really make the difference, in length or, presumably, being designed for men/male teens? I don't, of course, actually need FIS...

Not sure of current regs but FIS limits on SL skis were: Women -155cm or longer, Men - 165cm or longer. Most raced the shorter version.
"FIS Womens SL requires skis that are 155cm or longer. SL skis are available in 155cm, 156cm, 157cm, and 158cm (length varies by manufacturer) – which are all suitable sizes for women."
The 158's would probably make a great practice / rec ski for a strong woman or a male teenager / smaller sized man.

One reason for making 158cm SL skis was for use in City Race parallel slaloms. What were the pair that you know about designed for ?

My understanding was that 155+ was FIS woman's - but as said before, as I don't need to adhere to anything but the Grizzler standard, anything that works for practice and recreation is fine if the radius is short enough
Anyhows, if anyone knows of any that are going at a sensible price, junior or otherwise, please let me know.

Hi all. I’m 155cm and 56kg and ski hard. I was loving the Fischer RC4 Junior FIS Slalom skis I got second hand at the beginning of the season - supposedly only used for actual races by previous teenage racer and looked in great condition. Just dropped them off for a service and apparently the bindings are starting to rip out!
Not sure if that’s me or previous user....found a good deal on the internet for some new ones but obviously don’t want to do that if I might rip out the bindings again...
Although I ski hard, I don’t do much racing so you’d still think I wouldn’t generate forces the skis/bindings can’t cope with?
What do you snowheads think? Bad luck on a bad 2nd hand buy and ok to replace with new, or better to find some adult skis that are just as nippy for me ? (not so easy, hence why I went for junior- they are either too soft or too heavy)
