Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Should ski bindings be sold with brake retainers?

Anyone who tunes skis knows that you need a gadget to hold the ski brake arms in the 'closed' position to do any filing and waxing.

We pay enough for bindings - shouldn't they come with a cheap device to hold the brake arms out of the way? It's a bit like being sold a car without a handbrake! (or, rather, a handbrake that you can't release)

[I got the idea for this thread from this one on EpicSki.com which has some ideas. I've used bits of bent coathanger in the past. There's mention of a device on the 'Atomic Race' in this thread. Anyone familiar with that device?]

Not seen that, my favorite Wengen ski shop (central sport) gave me a bunch of the heavy duty rubber bands that they use, free gratis and for nothing when I bought some hot wax last year, I didn't even ask for them Shocked

Get one old inner tube, one pair of scissors and slice it up as required. Dead cheap.

Binding should't even be sold with brakes. Would add new EXTEME element to skiing and would do wonders for my ski sales. Twisted Evil

When I got some skis with Fritchi Freerides last year they came with just such retainers. Unfortunately I've since lost one (probably lying inside a glacier somewhere). The RC4s I bought recently didn't come with any, any unfortunately the Fritschi one are almost the right length, but just a little too long for the FX12s, so come unclipped frequently and ping all over the kitchen Shocked

Stick a screw driver through the whole break arm and voila it stays up. Otherwise the rubber bands that come off asparagus is quite good.

I need some help with breaks for my new skis. 130mm wide. Hmmmm. Might just go without Wink

parlor, so you bought the Prophet 130s? Surely someone (other than Line) make a binding with a fat brake?

The old "skinny ski" ski ties work well if you still have them. They're the ones about 8" long with velcro on.

zammo, yeah. you had a little bid on them yourself did you not? got a good deal in the end...

I'm still deciding between Naxo Nx21 & Freerides, both have 100mm breaks available. So lots of bending needed.

People skiing Spats have found various ways to get the breaks on so I'm sure I will sort it out but I've not seen touring binders on anything over 105mm.

In the past, I've just asked at ski shops if they have any spare, and generally they'll give you a handful of them. No need for the manufacturers to produce more environmental waste for the people who don't do their own servicing.

What a cheap bunch you lot are Shocked

For just a few quid you get a pucka brake retainer with a neat plastic finger pull handle for ease of use.

It's not us being cheap. It's the binding manufacturers not including a device that makes the brakes disengage.

It's an incomplete product.

If I buy a box of dates, they include a little stick.

What are they then? I think the only brake retainers I've seen are rubber bands of one kind or another.

Beans of Bicester do very good velcro ski straps which double as brake retainers.

The brakes on Salomon bindings can be removed by undoing one screw
