Poster: A snowHead

OK, i've just told my boss that I'm off to do a season come winter. I don't think that he was too pleased but what can he do?
Anyway I'm off to do a season, may work, not sure. I just want to ski as much as possible. So I was thinking, Chamonix, La Grave or Argentiere (mis spelt I imagine). What are my chances of getting some cheap digs in these places? Let me know if you've got any ideas.

gillie, I've done eight seasons in chamonix.
Things to think about.
-get your pass early, it's much cheaper.
-don't work unless you have to, driving to geneva on a powder day sucks.
-go for a shared house if you can, that way you will have people to ski with.
-have a car.
-Argentiere is well positioned but cold, and not as much action as chamonix.
-anticipate some mid season blues, I go home during the half term madness.
-you may never leave.
Cheapish digs are available depending on how much room you need.
Welcome to snowheads.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

This is an issue which is entirely personal to you. In theory, not working seems like the ideal scenario. However, as someone who did half a season not working, and 2 full seasons working, I much preferred the working ones. In the short term it was amazing having the freedom to ski all day every day. But after 3 or 4 weeks I sometimes found myself craving something a bit different.
In any case, depending on what job you take, a lot of Alpine jobs are based around maximising slope time so you'll very likely be able to find something that offers the opportunity to get on the hill a few days a week.
Good luck.

Having given up work to ski, ski and ski, the above doesnt sounds too appealing !

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I'd expect that it would be much easier to get something cheap in or around La Grave - the hamlets above the town seem very reasonable, although there isn't much nightlife up there

Really? I gave up "proper" work to work winter seasons, and the ability to ski 4 full days and 2 half days per week, most weeks, was a fairly attractive part of the deal. And (fairly obviously) is the thing I miss most after moving back into the real world when I called time on Alpine living.

Four full days and two half days are much more appealingo than a possible few ..

OK to clarify; my point was that there is more than one way to look at a winter season.
The first notion is the "ski ski ski" idea, on the mountain every day. Seems great in theory, but in reality (for some) less so.
I more enjoyed having the slopes on my doorstep but in actual fact averaging about 4 days a week over a season. Having a job to occupy me as well as plenty of ski time actually worked out better for me than my experience of being on the mountain 6 or 7 days a week.
Like I originally said, it's an entirely personal decision, but for some the whole "ski ski ski" idea is one that may be worth thinking about. As the OP said when he wrote "may work, not sure".
Just offering the flip sides of that dilemma with my experience.
