Does anyone have an idea whether the shops in Cervinia stock snow chains and at roughly what cost?
I'm going to be driving from Milan Malpensa next Feb and I'll get chains at the airport (or a supermarket on the way up) if it has snowed recently or it is forecast for that day. But if not, then I might not get them, then wait to see if I need them for the return journey. But I don't want to find myself paying rip-off prices in Cervinia, so I'm trying to work out whether to get them on the way up, just in case.

You can get them in a petrol station along the way. You have to carry them even if you don't use them

Ah, you mean it is a legal requirement to have them if you drive in the mountains? So, I'll have to buy them on the way, as you suggest. Or pay the €65 the hire company wants.

Yes, though if they are significantly cheaper than hiring, I'll buy them and just give them away if I'm over the weight allowance.
I know it isn't a lot of money compared to the whole ski trip, but there's something really galling about how they try to rip you off for these sort of extras, by charging more for a week than the chains would cost. Makes me willing to go to more effort than I normally would, for the sake of, say, €30 saving. Same with child seats. When I went to Breckenridge, I bought a seat at Walmart for way less than the hire company wanted. (I was planning to give it away, but as I was flying BA it was allowed as a free add-on.)

koru, technically snow tyres or chains are mandatory on the autoroute up through the Aosta valley. Oct 15 to Apil 15.
And the ones sold in supermarkets and roadside garages are typically crap.

koru, but still make sure they fit (have a practice before you leave the garage). Friends coming to stay with me, with chains provided by the car hire firm, found they didn't fit the tyres on the car.

Thanks. Actually, I found a car hire company will do winter tyres for €75. So I might go for that, as it should keep me legal and no hassles fitting chains unless it is so severe weather that chains are needed as well.
