Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

so what are everyone's recommendations for

single trip 1 week
switzerland
on and off piste (in case i fall off the piste)
cover for leaving hire planks unatteneded and unlocked whilst i have a gluhwine

Can't help you there, but we just bought new skis and were offered (and took up) the German ski club insurance which for € 27 for an individual or € 24 each in a couple gives you a year's insurance for all the skis you own (and any you hire) against theft (must be indoors or in car between 7pm and 6am otherwise no restrictions), breakage, damage etc., also covers rescue and recovery costs up to € 5000, transport to hospital, repatriation, third party liability and legal protection - and membership of the German ski club to boot. That's the basic level - there are higher ones. It's also pan-European, valid throughout Europe and doesn't matter where you live. So we have German ski insurance, sold by a shop in Austria to Swiss residents. Seems like a bloody good deal to me.

hobbiteater, snowcard.co.uk will I think meet your needs, however you may also find that the hireshop offers innsurance for the skis for a small extra amount, take it as if they get bust or go missing you should be able to get a new set of hire skis almost at once rather than sorting it through your travel insurance
