So, I've been reading up on Snowheads this morning, and I've seen lots of posts about women and freestyle, and the lack of oomppf/volume of people trying it/complaints that we're 'just not built for it'/general sadness that girl aren't trying in one way or another, and I think that perhaps, actually, for some of us on this forum, it's actually about having some company to go and give it a go?
So, does anyone fancy meeting up at Hemel on a Friday night for one of the rookie freestyle evenings, and actually try it? I would love to, but I have been put off by thinking that I'm actually old enough to be the mother of some of these youngsters, but that's no excuse for not giving it a go.
if you do fancy it, add a post, and if there's enough interest, we can turn it into a snow event over on t'other page? Obviously not wanting to be exclusive, if you're of the male persuasion, add your name too, and you can be an honorary girl for the night?

I'd always love to give it a try but never like the idea of embarrassing myself when a load of little kids are better than me.
I'd be much more comfortable going with a group of essentially freestyle virgins. Ive had a go on a few of the small boxes and things they occasionaly have out at MK, purely going straight over forwards, but never had the nerve to throw myself at a rail.

I'm not a girl, but at 40, I'm certainly no kid, but I'll often pop along to the freestyle nights at MK. It's all a bit of good fun, and certainly makes a boring slope more interesting.

Could definitely be tempted, would be nice to be able to do a jump other than the 'flying doggy paddle' which is my current move of choice! Would have to be the 8pm though - I'm in central london so no chance of making the earlier one.

I would love to.. really want to but at 8 months pregnant and a c-section scheduled I suspect I won't be able to partake until the summer! So unless you're all waiting that long (I suspect not) I'll have to pass. Although on the bright side the summer should be a lot quieter!
I am totally sure I would embarrass myself too but so long as I'm surrounded by similar standard skiers I won't mind

+1
Thanks for suggesting this. I can ski, but I'm a coward and I get nervous, I have been thinking about doing something like this to build my confidence on unfamiliar terrain.
Looking at the website the 'beginner' sessions seem to be on Thursday evenings. I could pop up after work, but it might not be good for everyone.

A pity Hemmel is so far or I'd love to be an elderly (49 on Wednesday) honorary girl for the night!

Right then, I'm at Hemel tomorrow evening, let me see what I can find out. I think you might be right about it being Thursday evenings, but I'll post back when I can find out a date. I might even see if I can get a friendly instructor to give us a bit of a 'focussed clinic', shall we say, and sparkles perhaps you can come and cheer us on!

Thursday is actually better for me as I usually train on the ice rink on a Friday. I'm in saas fee next Thursday/Friday and half term week, but maybe outside the school hols. Deffo keep us updated on here it sounds a good get together and always nice to meet other snowheads.

yes, will do. I couldn't get there tonight, house is on a severe flood warning (I'm hoping it freezes on the hills ) , but actually, they told me that the freestyle park is smaller until the peak season is over, so perhaps if we wait 4 weeks or so. I'll be back with some suggestions!

snowqueen11, fingers crossed for your flooding.
Much as it sounds a laugh I am a bit scared of breaking myself doing daft things....but the idea may take root and blossom yet....

snowyowl, The Fear is what stops me too. But I'd love to be able to get even a tiny bit of air without doing the international distress signal and landing the wrong way up
The fella in charge of the freestyle stuff at Hemel is something to do with Maverix, who do actually run girls only freestyle coaching sessions there for a reasonable price already. Perhaps it might be worth approaching them for a private group session? I'd be game for it, especially if we're all complete n00bs!

ha, I'm just doing exactly the same thing wilo86. At work, wishing I was on skis. Who's up for this?
And really, if we're extending it to snowboarders, we should probably invite some boys too. Anyone fancy a meet up? How about May 23rd? Let me know if you can make it, and I'll warn the Snow Centre

Hmm, I might be up for that but the 23rd May isn't a good date for me (I've got to be in Birmingham airport at 5am the following morning). I could pop in and say 'Hi' on Friday night but I wouldn't be skiing.
What are the rules about using hire equipment vs. your own on freestyle nights?

I will quite freely admit to not having the confidence to try jumps and freestyle, but I hope you all have fun.

oh! In in terms of using hire equipment - yes, I believe you just turn up and use Hemel skis as normal. Unless you own a pair of trendy twin tips, obviously

I'll give it a go so long as I can get there after work (8pm would be ok) and ideally I can scrounge a lift to St. Albans afterwards as there aren't any buses that late. 30th works for me.
