Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Strange ankle pain/feeling

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I was wondering if anybody would be able to help me.

I've been skiing for a number of years, although had a longish break of about five years, and went again last year. I'm determined to improve my technique and took a lesson in Morzine.

However, I have some sort of problem on the inside of my right ankle. I've occasionally felt it before when skiing, but it is particularly a problem when I started to try and get on my edge to carve. It wasn't a sharp pain, but a strange feeling which actually made me feel a bit sick at times. It's quite hard to describe. It doesn't hurt normally, but just when I ski. And it only seems to affect my right ankle.

Has anyone else experienced this? I have my own boots which seem to fit fine, but I'd like to be able to do something before I go skiing again this March.

Is this a case of going to the doctor, or would a specialised boot fitter be of more help?

Sounds like a mechanical problem with the ankle or hind foot ( ankle bone and heel bone).

Possibly an old ligament injury.

This is link to a blog ive just started. One of my first posts has been to help explain what you need to sort out any painful joint.

It basically explains the 4 steps to getting a diagnosis.

Hope that it helps.

@tomneumark, have you got moulded footbeds in your boots? Could be that your foot is not well supported in the boot and is pronating and therefore your ankle is rolling in against the shell of the boot causing the pain. I would go bootfitter then doctor. Good luck.

Thank you both for your replies. I did wonder if it is an old injury, although the last time I remember having an ankle injury was about 15 years ago at school.

I don't have moulded footbeds, but I did have a bit more of a google after I posted, and I think that the best plan, as you suggest, would be to go to a good boot fitter.

I would go boot fit first. I broke my ankle years ago and it set stiff and with an odd bony lump. My own boots are fine and skiing is one of the few things which doesn't make it sore because it is so well supported. I did hire boots for an odd day skiing when I didn't have my own kit and found a similar problem, I think there was pressure on the lump which messed the whole joint up. Fixed temporarily by tightening the upper clips as far as possible, stopped the calf moving at all and stopped the pain at the expense of numb feet. Back to my own boots and all is well.

I don't think a boot rubbing would give the pain you describe - that sounds more "internal". I think I'd go down @Jonathan Bell's route though checking boot fit is never a bad idea. It's not uncommon to need to have the shell pushed out a bit to accommodate a bony ankle but if that's needed it's more of a sharp, very localised, rub. My BiL had that problem and the local boot shop sorted it out overnight. He knew exactly where it was hurting - the place was very red, useful to show the boot technician! A few more hours and the skin would have been broken.

I think it does feel like something internal, and it does seem like a ligament issue. There's actually a lump that is a lot more raised on the right ankle, although they are present on both ankles. I'm pretty sure the pain is coming from this area. I think a combination of the doctor and a boot fitter is in order.

Thanks all for your advice. Much appreciated.
