Poster: A snowHead

This might seem like a complete numbskull question, but as someone completely new to this skiing business, I seem to be asking questions about everything!
At the weekend i trawled the ski shops looking for a jacket and a pair of trousers. The trousers i liked best (and that fitted the best) were Burton Snowboard trousers. Not ski trousers. Is there any major difference between the cut/design of snowboard pants and skiing pants?
Many thanks (again!)

The main differences are that snowboard pants are designed to have the waistband around your knees!!
Seriously, the main differences that I have noticed is where they have the "double fabric strength" bits.

Snowboard pants are optimised for sitting on the snow just over a blind ridge in the middle of the piste. It's an ancient charter or something like that.
They also have rapid drop mechanisms for achieving that builders bottom look so much in vogue with the hill frogs (snowboarders).
But, no, functionally I don't think there's a great deal of difference - cut and design? Now that's an entirely different matter!
Snowboarders may disagree and I'm always delighted to be corrected!

magic_hat, I think snowboard pants tend to have better waterproofing on the seat section because boarders seem to spend so much time sitting down, if they fit well I don't see why you shouldn't use them for skiing, though you might want to double check that they will fit over ski boots

I've found snowboard pants also get cut up around the ankles by ski edges. I guess specific ski pants are more reinforced in that area.

Snowboard pants are cut generously to give us lots of swing space and keep things cool and well aired. Our little wrigglers are hale, hearty and über motile as opposed to you skiers' crushed, half dead slugs. We will out-breed you all and take over the slopes HA!

On a serious note, MagSeven has the main opint to remeber. Ski pants tend to have reinforcing patches on the inside of the ankles, where your hard boots knocking together as you ski in 80s-swiss style knees-together parallel fashion down the hill can casue problems.
Since snowboarders' feet are locked into the board they don;t need this reinforcing, so if you wear boarding pants for skiing, then you rund the risk of wearing them away quickly around this location

nbt, There's also a lot to be said for high waisted salopettes for learning to board in as you'll be spending a lot of time sliding down the hill on your bum and shoving snow up the back of your jacket

Masque, I continually read your posts and think they're must be some error on your computer...
What MagSeven said really.
If they fit you all over (as in your body) then buy them. At the end of the day the clothing side of things have lots of crossover between snowboarding and skiing. The classification, as far as I can see, should almost now be:
a)classic skiing,
b)technical skiing,
c)lame snowboarding (urban snowboarding? urban fashion as opposed to urban rails which would be (see d)) and
d)steeze(y). (As seen sported by skiers and snowboarders, often in the park)
Borrowing the word 'steeze' to mean stylish, cool, tweaked etc...
Which means magic_hat, if you buy your Burton outfit and then ski you are officially one steeze mo-fo.

parlor, I like that classification although I'd trim it down to:
1. lame
2. technical
3. steeeeze
lame covers your categories (a) and (c) although they include quite different things
arguably steezey is quite lame, but that depends on the wearer's actual (rather than aspirational) steeze. sometimes steeze is just technical clothing 3 sizes too big (cf huge down jackets)
i'll shut up now

magic_hat, The main difference is that there is usually more fabric around the knee of snowboard pants to allow the legs to bend more when kneeling and sitting down, and the knee areas are usually reinforced, the legs are often wider, and the seat area can also be reinforced, but some do have extra thickness on the inside lower leg, so would still be ok for skiing. One difference used to be the colours. Ski Pants were often in brighter colours, ie red, whereas snowboard pants have always been in more muted colours such as grey and khaki - but this has all changed in recent years and the baggy, darker, grunge look can be seen in ski pant designs too. It's now a case of, if they fit, you like the colour, they are warm enough for the altitude, and keep you dry, buy them!!

Just buy them if they fit & you like them - they only wear at the ankle cuff if you put in the mileage and there's alway's duct tape to fix that for the ultimate ski-bum steez
Now my old 80s racing style ski pants were just downright wrong - can't believe I ever wore them. Modern practical cargo pants are a great improvement.

Your all wrong, because snowboarders speed a lot of time doing nothing and sitting down in the middle of the piste, they don't work up a sweat so snowboarders clothing have the sweat smell built in during the manufacturing process. Skiers on the other hand have to work hard to maintain the smelliness of there ski clothing.

Do snowboard pants have more insulation round the @rse and thigh area to facilitate sitting in the snow for hours?
