Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

zero binding ramp

Just noticed a pair of skis I've not yet used have a thicker afd plate at the toe than older versions of the same binding (Rossi axial2 WC), such that the toe sits level with the heel when measured. Other skis I own all have around 3mm rise at the heel, so will these feel odd?

It depends on you really, and the delta angle in your boots.

In my boots, I balance better with no ramp angle, so I use a 5mm shim under the toe piece on the Rossi/Look FKS.

For me, it felt a little better.

skimottaret, I believe you use a riser at the toe, and if so did it take long to adjust or was an instant improvement for you?

pretty instant for me. I like a flat binding ramp angle and on tyrolia bindings I need 6mm of shim and on my touring skis 15mm. on skis that were heal high I feel very back seat.

15mm is massive! I note the ramp on my Marker Barons varies greatly between the toe setting for alpine soles or touring boots, but then the boots are very different too.

skimottaret, indeed that looks massive! Are you also compensating against ramp in the boot with this?

Edit: a quick google shows a 15mm ramp is in at least some tech models.

yeah stupid design isn't it... The tech binding people now seem to be waking up to the fact that skiers notice this and are making newer models with less ramp. First time I skied with the tech bindings I had a heavy pack on and I assumed that my back seat feeling was that but they were almost unskiable for me until I shimmed em.. The boot is set up for flat ramp with this set up and not compensating for any delta in the boot..

I know sucks doesn't it... Someone on Wildsnow rightly pointed out that the crampons won't work very well if at all with the shims.

My touring boots also felt wrong at first, but later I found they have two fwd lean settings and the upright one suits me better. Not tried them in tech bindings yet.

I managed a decent with one boot on 21 and the other on 15deg. Another dumb idea by dynafit the adjustable forward lean.

balernoStu, if they're like my Maestrale RS's, their furthest forward position is way too leany so the most upright position is the only one I use too. I also fitted 6 mm riser plates under the Dynafit toes to match the much better delta of the Marker Barons ... http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=103989

moffatross, I have the same boots and binding setup but prefer the furthest forward boot setting. The most upright position feels way too upright and puts me in the back seat.

skimottaret, probably because I have long femurs and a short upper body - I'm all legs. The skier in Figure 4.6 on page 59 of Ron LeMaster's book illustrates this.

This page discusses ramp angle from bindings, and happens to use the model I mentioned as an example of zero ramp, albeit Look branded - the blue/yellow one - instead of Rossignol.

I understand why skiers choose to make ramp adjustments, particularly if an alignment specialist is involved, but am still surprised this binding is flat by default when almost all others have some inbuilt ramp before shimming. Are things changing?

moffatross, yes I love the whole QK concept, especially when trying to take multiple pairs of skis on a plane, but for now do not have kit which would benefit. Maybe sometime Wink

abd, it's a natural reaction. If something makes your body think it's leaning too far forward, it'll respond by leaning back.

abd, I'm sure skimottaret, will be along in a while but I don't like being heel high either as leads to difficulty pressuring the forefoot and tip of the ski with most weight being on the heels. This Wildsnow article provides some explanation:

I went from using the Dynafit Vertical ST with almost 17mm of ramp or heel/toe height drop to the Speed Radical with a 6mm shim under the toe piece to give only 8mm of ramp and it feels much better.
