Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Serfaus - New Year

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Been itching to try this place with a while with the family and think I may have got myself a cheeky deal over New Year. Has anyone been over that time and is it crazy busy or does the lift system take care of everything? Also are there decent flat runs for very timid intermediates?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Seems like a great place with nice runs and very modern lifts, downside, hmm main area above villages is south facing and open valley - I think - so you might get white ribbons on green hills quicker than the altitude would suggest. Still safe for Christmas and main season.

We were there last New Year and it was excellent. Snow was poor in most resorts but in Serfaus/Fiss more than 90% of the pistes were open and the ones that were open were all in very good condition. The closed runs were mostly steep blacks that were high up and more effected by the wind. The previous week we'd been in Lech which has a great reputation for early season snow but the pistes in Serfaus had better coverage. Like most of the rest of the alps the off-piste was pretty much non-existant. Some of it looked OK but there was no base, so if you were daft enough to try it you were down to the grass.

There are several good runs for timid imtermediates, notably the two big blues 89 and 90 that run from Komperdell all the way back down to Serfaus. Great family area up around Komperdell with various fun things for kids. The red from Moseralm back down into Fiss should really be a blue and it'd be a good confidence builder for someone stepping up from blues.

Mountain restaurants are all very good and great value. They do get busy at lunch time but unlike some French resorts they do good food all day. The Leithe Wirt on blue 89 above Serfaus was particularly good.

Queues - In Fiss if you don't get on the gondola out of the village before about 9 then there will be queues of about 15 minutes which go away sometime after 9.30, i.e. once ski school has started. From Serfaus the gondola queues stay busier all day as the pistes that run back to town are very popular. For some reason the Red gondola out of Serfaus seemed to be always quieter than the White one. The Red one goes higher and give you an easy run down through the kids are to get to the White one, so that's the one we went for. The Yellow one is for getting over to Fiss, but also gives a nice blue run back into Serfaus.

The only British people we met there lived in Germany - this place just doesn't appear in mainstream British brochures. But as there's lots of Dutch folk there English is widely spoken and everyone was very friendly - they seemed pleased that some British folk visited.

Only reason I'm not going back there next year is that I can't find accomodation. What did you find?

Valkyrie, I've got a half board deal at a nice four star hotel in Serfaus, I think we might have just got lucky because there was nothing else available apart from a couple of apart hotels in Fiss. Doing it DIY works out not a lot more than getting a week with a tour operator for the self catering apartments we've just stayed at in Avoriaz so it's a no brainer. snowHead

Nearly every German/Austrian family we saw checking out after last New Year were re-booking for next New Year there and then. I think that's why it's so hard to get a hotel there.

Been twice (not over NY). Really nice area, good infrastructure. The "bowl" above Serfaus is great for kids and is quite protected from winds. Good value for money IMV. Child oriented. The underground in Serfaus is usefull.
Down sides are:
The area gets less snow than St anton an Ischgl, even if it is quite close "as the crow flies". Long transfer time from Munich/Salzburg. Only one ski school and they don't offer half day group lessons (not ideal if you want to put the kids in ski school for the mornings and ski as a family in the afternoon. More expensive than other Austrian resorts.
