Poster: A snowHead
|
We are in Le Lac at the moment and with a hire car and a late return flight from GVA on Sunday night we are debating whether we could drive to the airport via Chamonix for a ride up the Midi cable-car.
A couple of questions :
- what's the drive like and how long would it take?
- do we just turn-up at the Midi or do we need to book a ticket in advance?
Many thanks.
Tony

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Drive is a bit more tortuous because the Gorges D'Arly was blocked by a rockfall some months ago and is still blocked. So allow more time and prepare for some narrowish roads! Its about 3 and a bit hours via Ugine. Going via the tunnel adds a lot of cost

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

chocksaway, it's not possible to go via the tunnel - you'd have to go over the Petit Saint Bernard first!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Bear in mind the Midi is 50e a pop. Not cheap. A full day-pass inc. Midi is 56. I know which I'd choose.

It wasn't when I cycled there on tuesday! There was a piste crossing the road. You can check the status of the cols here: http://savoie-route.fr/

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

franga, the Val d'Arly route would be best, IMV - the deviation is not too bad and quite interesting. Far better than a long and expensive motorway - and the Arly Valley is looking very pretty at the moment.
However, the key factor has to be weather. It's not worth paying a fortune to go up if the weather isn't 100% clear and sunny. and preferably fairly warm, or you spend too much time in the (very uninspiring) café, rather than out on the (very inspiring) observation platforms.

Thanks very much everyone.
Very useful.
We'll check weather forecast at some point on Saturday and then book the cable-car ride.
Thanks again.

Without even looking at any signs or official info, I am very, very confident that this is not the case! Doesn't open until June and is almost certainly still skiable on the Italian side.
