Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

What it takes to pass BASI L1

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I think someone asked this in another thread, so this is based on my experience passing 2 weeks ago. These are all my own thoughts/opinions so take them as that and hopefully some more experienced folk will chip in.

What I found very useful for me was spending some time before I committed with some L2 ski instructors who put me through my paces and gave me some good feedback.

In summary you need to be able to ski in the following styles 'on demand' and at a speed appropriate to that skiing technique. All these need to be demonstrated and skied with *very* good posture and balance:

Basic glide
snowplough glide
snowplough turn
snowplough parallel
basic parallel.

you need to understand what makes those turns work and be able to explain.

On top of that you need to be able to demonstrate good performance short turns and long turns with the skis carving through the last 2/3rs of the turn. You also need to be able to control your speed of longs and shorts using appropriate techniques.

You must also demonstrate you could run a class, ie make it safe, enjoyable, have good feedback, structure a lesson plan, review if at the end, as well as the basics of being professional in apperance, attitude and show improvement thru the week.

Folk that failed on my course 3( failed out of 9) failed to have good upper body management, ie shoulders turning during a turn. or inability to do some tasks on demand, ie high speed long carving turns. Of those that failed they did improve massively through the week, so I hope they felt it was time well spent.

That's a quick brain dump from me!

Interested in what others think??

Cheers,

Greg

Interesting, and matches the L1 Snowboarding I did as my second discipline a couple of years back. I wondered how the ski & board stacked up against each other.

I did the old ski 'foundation' course which shows my age!
