Looking Xmas in Austria/Italy/Andorra B&B or self catering
Do most of the pubs/restaurants open normal hours on Xmas Eve/day or would we have to find a Hotel serving food.
I'm guessing they are open but not sure if its like the UK everything shuts around 4-5pm Xmas eve and opens again Boxing day??
thanks

wasley, In France it's business as usual - Christmas Eve is the big celebration. Maybe alter your thread title to indicate that you want information about Austria, Italy and Andorra.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

IME Austria all the shops closed christmas eve at lunchtime. Restaurants were open. France nothing closes but christmas eve there's usually some festivities, pere noel arrives on parapente/nordic skis/sledge pulled by stagieres... torchlit descent by ESF, fireworks, vin chaud, jazz band in les menuires last xmas etc. IME (despite what I'd heard) there's usually more going on in France than Austria. Xmas day doesnt seem to exist in EU outside UK.

andyrew, +1 But in France there may be special (ie more expensive) menus on offer in the restaurants. Christmas day in ski resorts is like any other day - fantastic

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

New Years Eve is the time when the French restaurants really shove up the prices for special celebration dinners - pay through the nose to eat and drink more than you really want and feel so rubbish in the morning that the first few hours after the lifts open are blissfully quiet for those who imbibed more wisely.

Wasley : Not sure about Andorra but in Italy and Austria the main Christmas celebration is Christmas Eve evening not Christmas day . In a ski resort the main places that will be open throughout Christmas will be the Hotels .
If you want to do B&B or self catering I would find somewhere in a big resort which has lots of hotels nearby and book a table in advance at a Hotel for Christmas Eve / Day as, in general, they will be packed as Christmas to New Year tends to be their
busiest period of the year. (also reflected in prices) A big resort will normally also have at least a mini supermarket nearby that will be open but I would check with whoever you book with first.
Skiing is normally great on Christmas eve as its quiet as many of the locals prepare for the evening. Christmas morning like New Years Day (early am ) are also quiet and best enjoyed before it gets manic!
It would be easier and safer to just stay in a Hotel , or apartments linked to a Hotel, so you are guaranteed the food & seasonal festivities.

Surely even small resorts will have people desperate to sell you food throughout the holiday period? And for some people, it's good to escape the "seasonal festivities".

We've never found it difficult to find food anywhere in Italy or France when we've been for Christmas. Not been to Austria for Christmas so can't say. Christmas is generally a lot quieter than New Year though, a lot of resorts start to get busy from Boxing Day onwards.
