Afternoon All,
I'm looking at buying some new boots quite soon, now that I have decided that my current items feel a bit big for me and are fitted to someone else! I am thinking that it will be worthwhile going with an alpine/downhill boot with a walk mode which may make hiking sections easier, and touring if/when I do some of that. I'm currently skiing all pistes confidently, and taking part in short off piste runs, but intend to do more.
There seems to be more and more boots of this sort on the market, so I was wondering what the models to go for are? I have read fairly good reviews of the Lange xt130.
What a others can be recommended?
I will be having these fitted and ultimately chosen by a boot fitter, but would be interested in hearing peoples opinions nonetheless.
Are there any drawbacks to boots with walk mode?

hate boots with walk mode, especially "auto" ones, toast lands butter side down, usb plugs are always upside down on the first try, boots with walk mode all always in walk mode no matter what you do.

A friend has some Lange auto walk mode boots that don't work, bought last year, not sure exactly which model they are.

Modern Hybrids off no compromise as far as i'm concerned. Left a Salomon Race shell for a Cochise light, probably better to be honest!

Steilhang, binding pushes a tab on the heal, when you push the boot forwards when skiing it locks it in ski mode, when walking the tab comes out and allows the boot to go more upright. Sometimes....

Steilhang, my friends boots have a spring loaded cable attached to one of the boot clips. When you undo the clip the cable changes the boot (or not) to walk mode. He has removed them.

Okay so, hike mode not worth going for - that's disappointing. I was hoping the extra features such as the grippy soles would be good for walking sections of lines.

How do you come to that conclusion? All the people whingeing are complaining about 'auto' walk modes which is a feature normally seen on low end intermediate boots. That's not the same at all as the manual switch system on the proper hybrid boots that you were asking about. Salomon Quest/Technica Cochise etc have a good reputation (and CH20 is a bootfitter in Chamonix so he knows what he's talking about...)

capability, K2 Pinnacle, Technica Cochise and the Scarpa Freedom SL are probably the big three that are most like alpine boots according to the internets.
Stuff like the Dynafit Mercury/Vulcan or Scarpa Maestrale RS is you're more touring oriented.

My wife has the Rossi Alltrax, an alpine boot with walk mode and small din compatible grips at heel and toe. They seem to work well in both modes, the grips really helping on hard surfaces, and have seen a 30 min skin on Fritschis.

Just throw on everyone's offerings for "freeride" boots and get the one that fits you best, there's little to choose between them, and you will soon get used to any subtleties between them and you boot at the moment!
Sounds like you don't need a touring orientated boot like the dynafits or scarpas so just save your money!

just back from 4 days testing in austria and wore a pair of rossi all track pro with no issues whatsoever...certainly not much hiking uphill going on but they ski pretty dam well, only compromise was when skiing on race skis, but if i want to do that then a race boot works better

I recently bought a pair of Scarpa freedom boots for £320 (10% discount on Elis Bringham) great boots, comes with Alpine and din soles. If your feet and quite narrow they could be for you, the SL version is significantly lighter but also much more expressive.
These are not true touring boots but are aimed at people doing a bit of inbounds/outbounds they are pretty tough and ski like an alpine boot.
