Very excited to be going to Lech in 4 weeks but dismayed at how much ski hire is there! Alpin resorts are quoting me £280 for me and my partner! (no boots) Normally I would pay less than half that. Frustratingly in Warth over the hill the cost is indeed 50% less, but can't work out how we'd get there. Has anyone got any tips for cheaper ski hire?

Nope- Lech/St Anton is a cartel. If you're driving maybe rent down valley otherwise you've got to suffer the consequences of being in a "premium" resort.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

The Lech hire prices are eye-watering. The week before Christmas, I saw a TO's 6 day hire prices; €199 for top tier (no further details) and €149 for the middle layer (can't remember the price for the cheapies!). IMO, it is the "cartel" rather than "premium" nature of the area that is responsible. In any event, it alters the buy vs rent cost benefit analysis if you visit the area a few times. (To balance things a bit, I had my skis serviced in Lech. The cost was reasonable and the quality was good).

You have picked one of the more expensive resorts in Europe. "You ain't going to find many bargains there!". Suggest you BYO or go elsewhere, eg Warth.

RachelA, Buy your own on ebay. There's some great deals if you know what you are after. Saw some Head Mya 8, (ladies all-round freeride 2013 model) used one week, go for less than £100. Use them a week, them put them back on ebay to cover/cut your costs.

Some of our guys found cheap hire in Pettneu, no idea if you can get there from Lech but the bus probably does go there.
But it is a cartel. Better to just buy your own on ebay or here, use them for a week, sell on ebay. For the hire prices we worked out you could buy the skis they are renting after 2 weeks use, if not less in some cases.
The TO we used offered us cheaper ski hire in advance, if you are using a TO worth asking them for prices.

Cheers, we've already booked a package to Lech so going elsewhere isn't really an option. Thanks for the advice on the TO - I've emailed Crystal to find out how much they charge for ski hire and what the ski carriage price would be should we decide to buy. But am a bit worried that I don't really know what I doing and will be sold some rubbish. What sort of skis should intermediate skiers look for?

You won't be able to get to Warth without skiing. The road to Warth is normally closed in winter and the gondola connection is only reachable by skiing at both ends.

that sounds good to me. But beware - there is a lot of rubbish on ebay and people pay stupid prices (I sold some kids skis just before Christmas - they weren't rubbish but they did go for stupid high prices ).

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

If you're near a Decathlon have a look at their sale. They've got women's skis for £120. Got to be worth a punt, although I don't know anything about their own brand skis they seem good value.
The Head Myas that are on sale are shown in the text as Mya 9 which are quite expensive advanced level skis but the photo shows the Mya 2 which is a beginner's ski. At the price I think it'll be the Mya 2 that they've got.

pam w, I nearly sniped the Head Mya's for my wife as a second pair, but she's just had a pair of new Salomon's. Ebay has some 2012 Head ladies skis... Great One 159cms, 99p start, Head Wild One (2012) 161cms, a weeks use... £149. Decent Intermediate womens skis, cheaper than Intersport in Lech hire.

You know it makes sense.

It's cheaper to pick up kit at Sport Milanovic by the Sonnenkopf gondola if you're passing by that way on the way to Lech. A mate got some nearly new Nordica Dobermann Spitfires for about £60 for 3 days.

Or if you can get ski carriage, as others have said, it's better to buy & take your own, a guy in the chalet paid more to rent his Atomics from Strolz than I had bought last year's model for off the internet!!
