An unscheduled visit due to the closure of Arabba due to avalanche and Snowmageddon
Piste Map here
We were taken to Alleghe from Venice by the Dolomiti Star transfer service as the road to Arabba for the 10th Birthday Bash was closed. Dolomiti Stars contacted the Tourist Office and arranged beds for all the snowHeads and others on the coaches. Our first night was spent in the Hotel Centrale and we then moved to Hotel Coldai. We were made very welcome by everyone in the village. Due to the smaller nature of the resort we met up with almost everyone at least once and it was a very social event (ahem
On Sunday we had to move our belongings to Hotel Coldai, so by the time we had breakfast etc it was a half-day's skiing, although we couldn't see a yard in front of us. Ski Civetta (Owl in Italian) has around 80km of pistes in three sectors, Alleghe, Selva di Cardone and Zoldo. The link with Zoldo remained closed all week, and there was about 50-60% of the area open with more opening each day as the weather improved. It continued to snow for the next 3 days, and visibility was poor at times, although the snow quality was excellent. They were reporting 400cm of snow on the upper slopes on Wednesday afternoon when it finally stopped.
Once the sun came out, the views were breathtaking, and the skiing tree-lined. There was a great selection of very reasonably priced mountain restaurants serving pasta, pizza, stews and polenta, steaks, burgers etc etc. Bars served the usual bombardinos and calimeros.
On Wednesday, the snowfall finally came to a stop, and although the cloud still swirled around from time to time, the sun came out and we finally started to enjoy the skiing. Snow was light and powdery on the higher slopes, but becoming sticky lower down in the afternoon. We skied the runs above Selva di Cardone for most of the morning, although the lower runs were closed due to the continued avalanche risk. Occasional busy pistes would suddenly empty, and we enjoyed our best days skiing so far. Back across to the main Alleghe pistes after lunch in the restaurant at the top of the Fertazza chairlift.
Thursday dawned in bright sunshine and the views were just stunning. A beautiful blue piste under the red gondola back down to the Alleghe mid-station started the morning, then more skiing above Selva, this time the long tree-lined red down to the village was absolutely awesome. MOre lapping the blues and reds below the Fertazza chairlift, then back across to the Alleghe side after lunch. Pistes were still light and powdery, but starting to get a little cut up in places by then. Cloud cover was coming back in and by Friday lunch time it was once again snowing heavily.
Alleghe and Ski Civetta would be a great place for a short break. Hotels are reasonable and include breakfast. Restaurants in the village are good and there is a fantastic pizzeria with pizzas around 8€.
I'll post some photos later.

I should also add that towards the start of the week, it was raining lower down and many of us came home soaked through in the afternoon.

It's 4 euro for a Large Draft beer and 1.60 euro for a large red wine at the Bierstube Bar of the Garni Esperia where most of the Alleghe Snowheads used to meet for Apres Ski
