My son in law is a good skier, but a poor one, and coming out for Christmas. We have a pair of Volkl Energy Motion skis in 177cms, 105/65/93 Radius 19.0m. I am thinking of taking them out for him to use.
Am I right in thinking these were very good on-piste skis in their day, pretty stiff, fairly demanding? I bought them new some years ago (don't remember when), cheap because they were the previous year's "must have" piste skis, for my son. He's a very good skier but extremely relaxed and laid back; I recall him saying that the Volkls had a mind of their own and would streak off across the piste if you didn't show them who's boss. He has preferred more all-mountain skis during his seasons, and he mostly snowboards, but when I asked him whether we should now ditch the Volkls he just said "Nah, they're fine"
My son in law is probably too polite to tell me that these skis are just not up to it - though when I asked him he said they looked fine, and that he felt many intermediate skiers made too much song and dance about what skis they were on, and he'd be glad not to have to pay for rental.
I suspect that off-piste possibilities will be very limited anyway, at Christmas, but I could try to look out for another more up to date ski for our "quiver" if the Volkls have really had their day. Our skis are mostly 155 - 165 length, but Andy, though he's quite slim, is stronger and taller and sportier than the rest of us and probably needs something a bit longer.
Any advice gratefully received. Having paid a fortune for this upcoming Christmas holiday already I'm not desperate to spend more money on skis, but equally I don't want to spoil his week.

pam w, I think (its rather long ago!) I demoed a pair of these in 170 before finally buying a pair of 4 stars in 168 the next year, the motions were similar, if smoother. I would not call them that stiff, more modern piste volkl are seemingly much stiffer . (i didn't like the newer 5 stars, with all the double grip stuff they were dead compared to the four stars and rubbish in moguls. or may be thats me!). I think they will be fine, if they are really bad then you can always hire something., but a good tune and they will be fine.

Pretty solid upper intermediate ski. Not really demanding and the nice thing was that they would accommodate skiers who had no shaped-ski technique. Did require pretty strong retraction in moguls. Really nice on ice if the skier is well balanced.

Apples and oranges: Those skis were designed to be skied longer. 2001/2002-era ski lengths do _not_ correlate to ski lengths from 2005+

comprex, thanks. Oh yes, he has his own boots. It sounds as though they should be fine for him. I don't think they're as old as 2001/2 though time does fly. Indeed, yes, come to think of it, they probably are....

comprex, The skis have the motion system, so on rails they will be easy to move to any boot size, no screws involved. Foward pressure and dins will need to be set, but any ski shop can do that.

Keep an eye on the age of your bindings. I picked up a pair of these Volkl Energy 220 skis used out in Utah in 2010. My 14 year old son loved them. Took them to a shop in 2013 to have them adjusted for new boots and the old Marker M3.2's were no longer on the list that the shop would adjust. Maintain the skiis and they can last a really long time. But the bindings age out unless you want to adjust them yourself or replace them.

Are there any numbers on them? My first skis were Energy 320 and they were skis more suitable for beginners.
