Poster: A snowHead
|
Hello Chaps,
I'm comparatively new to ski maintenance and repair and have been edging and hot waxing my own skis for quite a few months. The trouble is, I do seem to have to re-wax rather a lot. I do ski quite a lot at Tamworth Snowdome and I am aware that their "cold white sand" is pretty abrasive stuff, but having to re-wax (the base edges look very chalky) after every 2hr session seems a bit extreme to me?! Is this to be expected, or am I doing something wrong, as nobody else that I know seems to suffer quite so much... It may be a ski issue, or perhaps a waxing technique issues, or perhaps its perfectly normal - I just don't know so any feedback/suggestions would be really rather helpful!
Just so you know, I am using Holmenkol indoor ski wax, which is pretty hard stuff and seems to fare marginally better than the all temperature stuff I was using before.
Many Thanks
R

rjb1, can be normal I think. Same used to happen to me with son's skis when he was skiing indoors regularly. It was as if I couldn't keep the bases black no matter what. I think repeated wax layers might help, hot boxing might help. Hopefully spyderjonwill be along to advise otherwise have you looked at his site http://www.jonsskituning.co.uk ? Worth a look. Good luck

For what it is worth, I take my skis for acouple of hours to TAmworth just to get the old wax off before a trip.

rjb1, what's the downside to not waxing at Tamworth i.e. do you grind to a halt half way down the fridge or just lap a little slower and if the latter, does it affect what you're trying to get out of your practice there ? Only asking because my skis only get a waxing about every 10 days or so (if they're lucky) but still carry enough speed that they rarely grind to a halt anywhere I ski, no matter what the water content of the snow.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I haven't been to Tamworth for years but from memory it's almost all ice, it's bound to rip ordinary wax off. Get some dry slope wax, it's more difficult to apply but will last a lot longer.
