Usually I go skiing at Easter, but this year it is so late I plan to go climbing instead. I just wondered if anyone is planning to go at Easter this year and where they are planning to go. Mind you I might just decide to go to Tignes for the Mayday weekend.

johnE, should still be fine in the high resorts - L2A etc, perhaps with some very nice flowery valley walking down in Venosc.

johnE, a holiday with everything! We went down to Venosc one afternoon after a morning's ski lessons up on the glacier, in June. We had intended going for a walk but it was so hot we got no further than the nearest place serving cold beers.

Think it's a bit early, but my understanding is if it is cold enough and high enough resorts will run canon?
Les menuires might be on the cards.

Looking back I was in L2A until about 19th April in 2011 and that was an awful year for snow and very warm. However there was still decent skiing from about 2400m up to 3600m. Hopefully it will be a whole lot better this year.

Claude B, that was by far the worst late season we'd seen, and I've been in Les Saisies every April since 2003. The resort closed a week early - normally it's open till about 24 April, though other parts of the Espace Diamant close earlier. I hope you have great conditions for the second half of your season.

pam w, Thanks and you. Lots over from ADH, which was more or less finshed then. The Cretes had a sliver of snow down the middle. Above Tourra it was fine though. I think it snowed the next week.

One season ticket stops at the beginning of May and the other has 6 or more glaciers on it, so I suppose I'll keep skiing all year as usual
Ski Amadé until Easter Monday, then Obertauern, Kaprun and Hintertux for me!

Thinking about going to St. Anton with a group on the 11th of April, hopefully the conditions won't be all too shabby, either way it will be a good time.

Richard_Sideways, usually pretty good - we have an excellent snow record. This is my 7th season here and we've had top-to-bottom, back-to-the-chalet skiing right up until closing day of every year bar 2011 (of which let us never speak again...).
This year is shaping-up pretty well so far, so I don't see any reason why we should have any issues.
It'll be classic Spring conditions of course - firm in the mornings, slushy in the afternoons. There is some nice south-facing off-piste to go at for that Spring corn.
The last 2 years, we've had deep powder in April, but that might be a bit too much to hope for!

same is true at my chalet in Bisanne 1500 (Espace Diamant) which is at 1500m and south facing. Les Saisies closes on 25 April this year - it wouldn't be where I would recommend someone should go who has a choice of the entire Alps - but really, early April is normally fine in a whole range of resorts, not just the Tignes and Val Thorens of this world.
Spring skiing is perhaps as much about attitude as altitude. Maybe start a little later, finish a little earlier, think about slope aspect and enjoy sitting on a beautifully situated picnic table with a bottle of cold beer and some Beaufort sandwiches.
One day some years ago I had a picnic lunch with my son and his girlfriend, sitting in the sun on the grass down in Hauteluce, surrounded by crocuses (the piste down was still perfectly skiable). Then a 150m walk back to the chairlift back up to the snow.

Really struggling with finding something for w/c 12 April
Myself and Mr Sideways need somewhere with good childcare and reasonably low budget. We have ruled out the Tarentaise area resorts due to lack of transport options (two pewky pre-schoolers means no way are we enduring a 3+hr Geneva transfer, the Eurostar / TGV option appears to be sold out for the return and Chambery flights non-existent) I seem to have basically left us with the options of Avoriaz and Flaine but would be grateful if anyone has got any other ideas in France or any other 1-2 hour transfer high child friendly resorts?

always29, Grenoble flights? Transfer to Alpe D'Huez or Les Deux Alpes is about 2 hours.
|
|
|

Zalways29, I recommend joy rides tablets. They stop any sort of sickness and also a a side effect inhibit urine production, which is very handy for small boys in particular!
Does it have to be France? Fly to Zurich, get the train to Chateau D'Oex or somewhere?
