Just home today after spending 6 days in hospital in Moutiers after breaking my femur whilst skiing in Val Thorens - ouch ouch ouch! All the people involved, from the stretcher guys to the staff at the hospital (with the exception of one nurse!) were all great. Obviously, I feel a bit raw at the moment and don't know if this would put me off skiing - I certainly don't like the aftermath of an accident. Been skiing for 10 years with nothing untoward and it happened on a blue run!

Simple fracture - I think - I have metal rods in place. Was supposed to be going to Les Deux Alpes on 25 January and Bulgaria on 2 March!

jb1970, ouch! I'd class anything that required metalwork as being a least a little bit complicated! Full recovery is probable, I think. I know a couple of guys who have fractured femurs and returned to skiing the following season.

jb1970, Joke mate, apols if in poor taste.
I'm minded, though, of holidayloverxx's accident which resulted in "crushed bone at the top of the fibula and a mushed up joint where it meets the femur plus a lateral meniscus rupture.
Edit: a lateral condyle comminuted/compression tibial plateau fracture."
Not sure how this compares to your injury but she is back up and skiing. http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?p=2273161&highlight=snowhead#2273161.

jb1970, what a shame. Sounds very sore. Glad you've had good treatment. Hope you make a good straightforward recovery. Was your insurance company good? I remember you were a bit concerned about your cover before you travelled.

Anyway, get well soon and you'll be back skiing by next season.

if it makes you feel better when i crashed my motorbike I broke my left tib and fib, left ankle, left thumb and wrist and four left ribs. I was lucky but got back on the bike four months later. Not got one now so took up skiing for thrills and I am loving it. only a broken thumb so far and hope it stays that way.
out of interest how did you fall as the femur is a tough old bone to snap

jb1970, Inspirational statements seem to have kicked in, if it's any help I broke my back falling off a horse, but still ride them.
Ditto about the toughness of the femur - I've treated and seen broken femurs, but they have been in older ladies - the typical injury group. I'm betting you landed on something uneven on the way down.

jb1970, sorry to hear it! A good friend of mine--a fine ski racer--fell and blew up his femur last week during training on a rainy day in PA (USA). It can happen to anyone. Rehab it and get back out there!
