This week's snow feature in The Guardian looks at holidays targeted at women only, run by tour operators with names to reckon with - Rudechalets, Walking Women, Chicks Unleashed and Arctic Ladies -
- Snowboarding in Morzine
- Snowshoeing in Bulgaria's Stara Planina mountains
- Skiing in Snowbird, Utah
- Ice-climbing in Norway and Scotland
- Dog-sledding in Alaska
Read it here.
Anyone have any comments on ski/snow trips run by women for women?

I would imagine that it's not a bad market. We have several TO's specialising in women-only cycling holidays up here in ADH so why not skiing? Personally not my scene but think it would do well with the Americans.
'Chicks Unleashed' sounds fairly hardcore!

David Goldsmith, I have proposed a women's only week, and there's been some positive feedback. Unfortunately the problem seems to be the timing. some want to come for a "girlie" week, and some would like to come with their families and just ski with other women. I think it's an excellent idea, and it wouldn't only be for the more "wimpy" types. I know quite a few good women skiers who'd just like a chance to get away from the testosterone influenced atmosphere of ski-ing. It's actually harder when you're a better woman skier, as you're constantly expected to be like a man, ski like a man, and be as agressive (not talking about speed) as a man.
sarah@alpedhuez, How about us joining together to organise something 2006-7? You could do accom & I could come over???

Surely Chicks Unleashed should be called Chicks with Picks or did someone beat them to the name?
There must be quite a sizeable ski market in North America for this as most resorts seem to have women's ski clinics etc.

I don't think it's a bad idea
I've always been away with a bunch of girlfriends skiing for a few days a year. We ski differently - don't rush madly round the mountains trying to cover every avaialble piece of piste. We stop frequently for Vin chaud and often don't make it out of the chalet until 10 or 11!! Non eof this up with the lark to be the first on the slopes. It's a much more relaxed holiday. The guys usually go seperately another time and do all the thrash and burn stuff without us!
Some of my mates are coming out in january and march just with the girlies - no husbands.
There are places left if anyone wants to join them for a hassle free laid back holiday on the snow without all the competative edge!

We're going for our first girls' trip skiing in March, have to say i'm extremely excited but perhaps a bit worried as well?!! Also the thing about women snowboarding in Morzine was also featured in ELLE, and was said to be one of the top ski resorts to be heading to at the moment, woohooo!

I don't know that women will improve as much without the men. Men are stronger and less concerned about falling, we need to work hard to get better technique to stay up with the men and be able to zip past them on the difficult bits while skiing sedately and enjoying the surroundings on the flat bits of the red runs. Nice to ski without kids though.

What are you worried about? There is nothing a woman can't do that a guy can - especially boarding or skiing!
Jane L
Yes women have to work harder - it's a strength muscle thing - but why so competative?
Just do it for yourself! Who cares what the guys think!

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

JT,
Honda Kitty, I can sympathise with your experience, but your problem was clearly that you were all together.
If you looked at my profile you'd see that I'm a proefessional ski teacher - Grade 1, Equivalence and all, so I was proposing courses for women only. In that case the "wimpies" and the "racies" for want of a better description would obviously be separated so the situation wouldn't occur. I've skied all my life, and been told all my life "don't ski like a girl". To get to a high level, you have to be a surrogate man - well - WHY? All this stupid male boasting is sooooooo tiresome and tedious. Why can't men be told to ski like a girl????? BTW I am very competitive - it's not that.
