My dear wife had a nasty fall last saturday, and was told today that she has ruptured her ACL.
The physio said that at her age reconstruction is probably not an option as the postop rehab is too intense.
She is fit, and not overweight at all.
Has anyone got any experiences or thoughts?
Suggestions as regards specialists in the Surrey or London area to consult with when we get home.
We have just arrived in Niseko for what was supposed to be a trip of a lifetime...no skiing for her though...some trip

I'd be extremely cross if I were told that - definitely look into it further with a specialist, when you get back. I'm sure that many fit and active people in their 50s are a lot more capable of the rehab than fat idle people in their 30s.
Sorry to hear about the injury - a real bummer. Would it not have been possible to use the injury (which I think was before you went?) to cancel the trip and re-schedule?

I responded to your other thread - but given the location you are in, I would be tempted to seek resident snowhead Jonathon_Bell - if you send him an email or PM I am sure he will respond, he has been extremely helpful with me.

I would go to see a good specialist and use physios for what they do best, which is not giving consultations on possible surgeries. I haven't heard that there is an age restriction for reconstruction unless there are some health problems.

To be fair, they don't necessarily recommend reconstructions for fat idle people in their 30s.
However, I don't recall my rehab being too bad - it requires a bit of discipline and dedication to do the exercises regularly but it's not like you have to be lifting massive weights or cycling 100s of kms. I lot of it is about getting the co-ordination back so not physically hard, but quite challenging to begin with - you are re-acquiring skills.
Definitely go for a second opinion from a good knee surgeon and if she hasn't had an MRI yet, don't be sure of the prognosis yet either
Sorry to hear about this and hope she mends up

rungsp, my wife had an ACL reconstruction at age 50. Ruptured it playing tennis. The recuperation period was about 8 months before she started doing any serious sports again, and about 1 year till she was back playing competition tennis. The main thing which the docs kept on impressing on her was to take it very easy for at least six months after the op, which she did. Now she's back to 100%

Gosh my sympathies to your wife, can I add the recommendation of Jonathon Bell. He sorted out my husbands torn meniscus's on both knees without surgery. He was highly recommended by a friend as he had operated on her ACL successfully and she had done loads of research. No idea of the age issue but as a similar age to your wife I would not be happy to be told that.

Age is irrelevant.
Aspiration is everything.
It may turn out that your wife can get away without reconstruction ( some can) but if she is fit and wishes to remain active and prepared to put in the work the results are proven to be as good as under 40s .
I think that often the over 50s do better as they are often more dedicated to the recovery programme. I've helped international vet hockey players, skiers, tennis all get back in over 50's. I once helped a 70 year old get back to walking ( in places such as Himalayas ) after ACL rupture. She was fitter than most of the 40 year olds I treat!
Happy for you to pm me or just post.

Sounds like rubbish to me. I may be old, but I'm thinner, fitter and more flexible than almost anyone and everyone younger then me in the UK at least.
If they're rationing treatment, then age is unlikely to be a legally justifiable metric, but it's definitely not a practical one. I'd refuse to accept that, and go abroad or get your visa card out if they don't do what you want. Cheeky sods.

I had an ACL reconstruction at 48 and was asked by the consultant whether I needed the op for an active lifestyle! Once I started listing my sports, he immediately said it was worth doing. I then phoned my physio to get some pre op advice and told him I was going to the Alps for the family summer holiday 6 weeks after the op and that I wanted to know if I could cycle on that holiday. I won't repeat his exact response, but he then said if I was prepared to work at it, he would do his best. Anyway, I was cycling, white water rafting and walking on that holiday with no problems. I was still sensible though and didn't do anything totally silly. The key was a good surgeon, sports physio and a desire to work hard at the post op fitness. I now ski, climb and trail run with no problems whatsoever. Well worth doing, although I was told not to ski until 9 months after the op, hence I had the operation in June, so I could go skiing the following March!

rungsp, Mrs Ski has done both. All somewhat after her 50th. We do a bit more Tele now as it's better for knees.

I have had several knee injuries which tweaked various ligaments eventually rupturing my acl age 55. I had surgery and did all the rehab and now 10 years on I am still skiing over 60 km a day and doing black mogul runs. I did all the rehab and had an excellent physio. Op was in early April and I was skiing again on the dry slope by November. I was told to only ski blue runs at Christmas that year but did that for 1 hour, then an hour of red, then on to black. Just completed week 7 of this season with week 8 in Meribel next week. I do lots of walking in summer - trekking in Himalayas last November. As long as she is prepared to do the exercise there is no reason not to get the repair and have a stable knee again.
