Evening.
Bit of background:
Have spent last three holidays in Germany. Garmisch or last two. We get hull Rotterdam ferry and drive down.
We are a family of five and have managed to get a weeks skiing for under £2500 all in (and I mean everything!!).
However, ready for a change.
Would like to fly and go way for new year as we did this year. Only got same budget too!!! We will be a group of 20 - five families - a mix of experienced and beginners.
We live preston way so by flight old gov b Manchester. Me and three other dads of have booked a cheeky four days in Sauze D'oulx early March.
Any ideas??? For that sort of budget???

No way to do it on that budget if you fly for the standard Sat-Sat new year week. Think driving may be the only realistic option!

Gonna be tough.
Flight wise get one of the low cost flyers. (easy jet / Ryanair), if you can fly on non weekend days the cost saving can be noticeable, stick with minimum luggage. eg Man 14th March to Geneva or Turin then return 21st looks like about £110 - £120 each..
Work out a good transfer deal with one of the Sauze D'oulx taxi / minibus companies, I'm guessing that they'll do it for €25euro each way per head.
So logistics is about £205 each.
A 6 day lift pass average for family of 2 adults and 3 kids is £375(Adult is £150, child £25) or £75 each.
Ski hire for a family of 5 (2 adult/ 3 kids) is £200.
Now we are @ £480 per head.
Not really sure what the accommodation and food drink will run to, but I'm guessing that atleast another £300-400 each..

With a group that size you may be able to get some free places, look for companies that specialise in groups. Some do 1:5, some do 1:10, some in between, it's probably your best hope for bringing the cost down at New Year. Other option is to go somewhere with a really cheap lift pass, but any area with a cheap pass is likely to be pretty small and limited.

There was an article in the GB ski club mag last month about a chap who hires a mobile home (static caravan) with his family...very cheap.....might be worth looking into

Just to clarify does this include all of the ferry, petrol, accomodation, food (both on and off mountain), lift pass (how many days?), ski hire, ski lessons?
Were these trips also at new year?
Was it catered or self catered?
For a group of 5 I reckon driving has to be the cheapest option. Though personally I would ram it down to Folkestone and get the tunnel if I was based in Preston. It's a fair trek but motorway all the way.
Also self catered has to be cheaper on a peak week like new year. In France I would expect to pay 500-600 Euros for either a biggish apartment in a small resort or a smallish apartment in a big resort.
Lift passes willl be a bit cheaper in smaller resorts and you should check out what family or group discounts are available.

This - flying at peak time with a large party can't ever compete with self drive and the access to cheaper accomodation that having a car provides.

Can you go Christmas week - much cheaper than New Year. A group of 20 ought to have some buying power so ask around for discounts.

Markmcn, you want to go on one of the most exensive weeks of the year and pay just £500 per person? Which needs to cover transport to the snow, lift pass, accomodation, food, ski hire? No chance.
Double your budget at least, if not tripple, for NY.

It can be done. If you drive and booking your channel crossing early enough it shouldn't be more expensive at new year. Things like petrol, lift pass, supermarket food, ski hire are not more expensive at new year. It's only really the accomodation and possibly flight prices that will be a great deal more.

Group of 24!!
For my family of five:
Ferry £265. Accommodation £750. Petrol £300. Ski pass £600. Got all own skis boots etc no lessons needed. Another grand for food and beer and job done for three grand leaving Boxing Day returning jan 3rd.

Just thought a bit more about that and if you eat out, then probably. Scary!
I must check out Garmisch, most ski passes in France are £220 or so for a week so £600 is a snip for 5.

You need to check out the equivalent. Garmisch is about 70km of piste I believe. An equivalent in France would be something like La Norma where for 5 (one child goes free) it would be 516 Euros for 6 days.

Kids don't drink beer or eat so much. If you don't eat out a lot on the mountain and mostly cook for yourself in the evening it's plenty. Actually seems a lot more than we usually spend (2 adult 2 kids)!

Layne, Yes, not a big resort I have looked to see..looks nice but not sure it's big or high enough for our late March trip.
We have 2 adults and 2 kids except somehow the kids are now 22 and 18 (how did that happen?) and can spend €200 on a slap up meal with wine etc in any Restaurant in Les Arcs..but would do that twice in a week and self cater for the rest... if you add in light lunches and drinks/coffees about €80 per day...that's €880 without the food shopping. But then we don't go clubbing/pubbing much. If you have energy for Apres ski...you weren't skiing hard enough is our mantra.....

Have you got kids? Mine eat more than me and probably cost more more in drink as well given how quick a coke or hot choc needs refilling 2 or 3 of those to my one beer and the cost mounts!

I have kids aged 6 and 8. They eat about half a portion of an adult meal. One drinks water, the other milk or water.
