Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Why training runs for downhill races only?

This may be an obvious question, but why are there training runs for downhill races?
Is it because of the danger that are not seen in other disciplines?

There are training runs for GS and SL too. It's just not so obvious.

You can run SL and GS training on relatively short pistes with relatively little piste preparation: close the piste, timing gear, and some safety fencing, and many resorts have dedicated pistes which are used for this a lot of the time.

DH/SG is a little different: the sheer length of the courses and the high speeds achieved mean that the course has to be fully fenced off from the public pistes and large amounts of safety fencing installed: this takes a lot o time and a lot of money, and resorts are not willing to do this regularly, but only for "proper" races - so what happens is that when a DH/SG is scheduled, they use a few days before the official race for training and testing out the systems.

At least, that is my understanding....

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I think the question was more, why do you get training runs in downhill but only course inspection for slalom and GS???

Firstly you are right about the speeds and blind ridges it's more dangerous so it's important to have had a few runs already.

Also due to the tight lines and high edge forced in the slower 2, the courses get eaten up faster. A slalom course would not be able to take the beating of a few hundred skiers before a race without being able to take thee poles out re-prepare it and make sure the poles go back in exactly where they were.
