Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Stuben - wire bridges?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Does anybody who lives in the St Anton / Stuben area know the purpose of the wire bridge structures under the main chair up into Stuben?

They look like they are there to catch falling skis, but why at Stuben on this one lift, and no other resorts or lifts?

Muddy John, Welcome to snowHeads! snowHead

Yes, I think their purpose is to catch falling skis/poles, as far as I can recall they are positioned where the chairlift passes over one of the pistes. In fact such structures are fairly common, they are often used when chairlifts cross roads (you definitely wouldn't want a ski or pole falling onto a vehicle underneath which might cause further traffic accidents!) and when a chairlift crosses above another lift (e.g in Colfosco in the Dolomites the Forcelles chairlift passes above the top end of the Edelweisstal gondola lift and the gondola cables are protected by a metal bridge structure). Interesting, I asked a similar question to Espri on Monday over in Kitz. Ill leave the conclusion to him.

Thanks Alastair, now you mention it I remember seeing it in that one case at Colfosco.

But in Stuben they are not across all run the lift crosses, and they are over some gullys.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I think the chair lift you are thinking of, out of Stuben, is slow and sometimes very cold. They have the little blue blankets to put over your knees and I guess that could result in more people dropping stuff as they wrestle with a blanket on the way up.

My theory is that these structures are related to evacuation from the lifts, so that there is a maximum length of rope needed for the work. I doubt if these "bridges" are there to catch skis, for there are lifts crossing pistes all over the place without such protection.

espri, that would make sense. Isn't there also one under the Raintal chair on the Kitzbüheler Horn over a chasm?

That's what I originally thought, DB, but then I saw that there's often a wire down the middle that would work like a cheese slicer. Gouda? Laughing

I don't know about the Raintal. The one that jafa and I were looking at was under the Pengelstein II chair. There is also one at the Hochhörndl lift in Fieberbrunn. Maybe I can ask there next time I'm there.

I've got it.

You are all probably aware of Germany's great Engineering, you only have to look at the likes of Mercedes and Audi. Well, after living here in Austria for well over a decade I've got a feel for the high level of local workmanship. I'm almost certain that netting should be over the piste a bit further up but when Sep and Franz put it up they'd been in the Moserwirt beforehand.
