Help!!
Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Lech are to use Highland cows to help prevent avalanches.
The article reports on brush removal, but I suspect the benefit is actually in consolidation and compaction of the snowpack from the cattle's hooves. It'll be interesting to see if there's any demonstrable benefit.

Should the cattle wear helmets?
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Looks like a big avalanche poodle with horns.

Did someone call for a horny avalanche poodle?
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

, I saw this reported earlier and commented then that grazing cows on the slopes is hardly new - happens all over the Alps. Despite the picture of the cow in the snow, the article makes it clear that they spend the winter indoors (they'd be a collision hazard on the slopes in winter, quite apart from the fact that there'd be nothing for them to eat). Practically all the pistes in our area are pastures in summer and it's hard to believe that highland cattle are any different than the usual cows round here (Abondance, Tarine) in terms of their ability to tread the ground. A peculiar story.

, Fair point.. I think the timing of the article is such that it suggests more than it actually is. As you say, it's not unusual to have cattle grazing on the slopes that we end up skiing on.
