Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Attwoolls Gloucester

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I've decided to bite the bullet and finally get my own boots. I'd describe myself as a pretty average intermediate (having started to ski in my 40's). I live in Cheltenham and am looking for somewhere fairly close (within 60 mins drive) where I can be properly measured and boots fitted. Friends bought theirs from "Attwoolls Gloucester" a few years ago and recommended them. Does anyone know what Attoolls are like these days or suggest somewhere else that I could go?

Budget is around £300 tops all in.

Many thanks.

Put it this way I wouldn't go to boot fitter or ski shop to buy a family tent and camping equipment!!! rolling eyes

Snow and Rock in Bristol (Filton, just off the M5) is an option. Can't comment on how good the fitters are though.

simple answer - bash along the A40 / A34 to Bicester (may be fractionally over the 60 minutes) and go to Solutions 4 Feet who is one the of the best in the country
I am a happy customer

try to get a recommendation of a specific fitter at S&R. I'm sure someone here has used the Bristol one and have good service. Some of the fitters are clueless some are good. I used S&R at Exeter and had a good experience. there are however many SH's who would say the opposite of S&R.

Attwoolls must only have recently started doing ski boots so call them and ask what qualifications experience their fitters have.

Ps I'd definitely buy another tent from them.

Alternatively this might be an option for me.....

"We offer a full boot fitting service with our friendly trained staff. Whether it be for racing, piste, powder, trundling round the mountain, or snowboarding, we'll do our best to find the correct boot for you. We have a fully functional boot lab, so we can modify the boots if they don't fit off the shelf, helping us to combat all your lumps and bumps.

Sidas/Conform'able Custom Ski insoles with heel stabilisation, for extra comfort, support, stability and response in your ski boot.

Custom technology gives 100% customization of your insoles. We'll take a mould of your feet and then heat a flat insole. Placed on your footprint, the Custom insole will hug the shape of the foot completely, providing the best possible well-being."

I would but think that would break my budget. All I really need are some comfortable boots that will provide a little flattery for my very limited skills.

PeteMan, if you have friend who at least knows stuff about stuff when it comes to boots take them along first and ask some probing questions. Anyone who has already had boots fitted or maybe skied for years will soon detect if the fitter is knowledgeable or not, they will instantly smell the BS if the fitter is a Saturday boy with no idea!

Ah, unfortunately I don't know anyone like that!

Ski and snowboard at Bristol do appear to at least have all the gear....

I reckon that the best investment you could make in skiing is boots - skis are all pretty good, you can get cheap and good clothing, you can go on cheap(ish!) holidays - but boots really do make a difference...
When I got my boots at Solutions 4 Feet I also had a balance session and bought custom footbeds... but the boots were standard price and the fitting seemed to be charged within the boot price...
If you look on their website boots start at just over £200... doesn't seem all that expensive...
I paid c. £500 to include all the other bits as well - still very good value when my boots were rrp £330

give him a ring

Good advice. Have just called Solutions 4 Feet and they charge £30 for the fitting appointment plus the cost of the boot so should be looking at £270-330 (excluding footbed if required). Have made an appointment for 1st Feb. At least I'll have the comfort of having been to one of the best regarded places in the UK rather than compromise and always be thinking "I wish I'd have go to...."

Brought a pair of boots from Attwools a few years back, they do have a trained boot fitter, who was very good and very attentative. They couldnt match the equivalent Decathlon price for the same boots but did knock some money off. I would recommend them.
