Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Thollon les Memises to La Chapelle

We possibly have the opportunity of renting a friend-of-a-friend's apartment in Thollon les Memises for a week for the bargain price of €100 for a week. We stayed in Avoriaz back in January and are keen to explore more of the Porte du Soleil, how easy is it to get from Thollon les Memises to La Chapelle? Is there a bus service or would we have to hire a car?

Just trying to figure out how the bargain of the apartment balances out against the fuss of getting access to Porte du Soleil. I realise you can ski in Thollon but as I said, we're keen to spend most of the week skiing the PduS area.

Any help/suggestions appreciated!

you'd need to bus to thonon and then bus to Chapelle, would have thought it impractical without a car.

We got an appartment for 4 in Chapelle on w/c 15th March for €230 (similar price most of the season except the hols), so you may end up as cheap and much more convenient looking locally. we used the office de tourisme site http://www.lachapelle74.com/

A pain by bus and around 45mins by car.

If the snow was good you could have a bit of fun doing a day or two at each of Tollon, Bernex, Abondance, La Chapelle/Torgon and La Grande Terche which would involve 0, 15, 30, 45 and 45 minutes each way respectively. If you wanted access to the wider PDS it would take about an hour to Chatel, Morgins, Ardent. Morzine or Les Gets.

I reckon you'd have to hire a car. We have an apartment in Thollon and almost always ski at Chatel. If you drive up to and park at Pre-la-Joux (for free), you are within easy reach of some really good bits of the PdS. It takes just under an hour. From Thollon, head to St Paul, turn right then left towards Vinzier and then on to Chevenoz. Past there you are into the Abondance valley so head all the way up to Pre-la-Joux.

Chapelle takes less time, but is a bit out of the way and not accessible to anywhere good (in my view).

St Jean d'Aulps is worth a days skiing if the snow is good. That said, if you get a powder day, Thollon is great. Many times the group I was in has had the mountain to itself.
