Hi everybody
I thought I'd better introduce myself since I'm new here. I'm Mike and I've been skiing for two years. I'm probably a reasonable intermediate now (happy on all reds, have been down an easy black). I've only been to Italy so far (Val di Fassa and Val di Moena/Obereggen in Austria) so I don't know whether those runs are considered easier/harder than elsewhere.
We're planning a trip to Whistler this year, so hopefully I'll be able to pick some brains around here for info. Also, I'd like to get one or two ski weekends in this year, as I'm not able easily to take time off during the week. I'll definitely be looking for advice on organising the weekend trip(s).
Finally, if anyone's got a spare place they need filling for the first week of January, then let me know. I'm being given a mandatory holiday for that week, but it seems that no-one else I know is!

magriggs, hi, welcome to !
There is a Skier Profiles thread http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=1960 where you could put a bit about yourself too!
(and everyone else should update their sections for the new season!)
Using the search will produce a lot of info for wistler, but don't hesitate to ask for more details!

Hi, welcome to Snowheads.
Won't be much use to you myself as I'm pretty new to skiing (first time was in January this year) but will tell you that you couldn't have picked a better forum to come to - I've had tons of great help from fellow snowheads and look forward in the future to returning the favour myself once I've picked up a bit of experience.
Good luck with the skiing and getting away in January - I'm sure you'll get lots of help here.

magriggs, welcome. Whistler is wonderful. I was there this Easter.
The run classification is slightly different in that there are categories of blacks, but the red and blue grading will be similar to what you are used to.
We stayed in Creekside rather than Whistler Village, and I am glad we did. Whistler Village is a lively place and fun to visit (10 minute bus ride), but Creekside is the place to relax (and sleep).
Make sure you go out with the Mountain Hosts on your first day (usually 11.30am) - its a free service and the hosts will give you lots of good advice as well as show you round the mountain.
Warning: lift lines are wondrously polite. Do not try barging in or any other European bad habit. You will quickly see that polite lift lines move far faster than push-and-shove ones - mainly because all the chairs go up full.

David@traxvax, can you PM me details of that 2-for-1 trip? I might be able to entice someone else if it's free

Jonpim, thanks for the tips, I'll bear Creekside in mind. I'd rather like to be walking distance to the lifts, though, having suffered two years of the ski bus (and nearly disappearing off down the side of a mountain last year...)

Hello there,
I'll back up what Snowshine has said. I'm even newer to skiing - had my first lesson at the snowdome in MK on Friday - but so far everyone here has been extremely helpful and I feel that I am much better prepared for my trip in January than I would have otherwise been.
welcome

Nooooooo don't listen to him b]magriggs[/b]! If you stay in Creekside, although slightly cheaper and quieter than Whistler village, you have to get the bus if you want to ski on Blackcomb - either that or go all the way up the creekside gondola and ski out to Whistler base (if you can ski out unlike most of last season owing to lack of snow at the base). If you stay in Whistler village, you can take a gondola up either Whistler or Blackcomb.

Hi Everyone,
thought I would hijack magriggs thread and say hello as I am also a very recent newbie.
My names Duncan and I'm 25, just writing up my thesis at the moment and have been skiing for the last 3 years.
I've only been to Andorra so far, El Tarter once and Pas de la Casa twice, mainly due to the cheapness of the resort and the awesome nightlife. I'm a pretty confident skier on Reds and have been fine on nearly all the blacks I've skied in Grandvalira (although I've heard they're overrated and I would die on a serious black in the Alps).
My friends and I swore never to go to Andorra again after our trip last January, not because we don't like it there, but so we could try some of the world's other resorts. Plus Toulouse airport is run by clowns!
However, as I am still a student/unemployed and so have very little money to fund my ski obsession, I got tempted by the evil people at Thomson this year at the ski show at Olympia. Therefore, in 2.5 weeks some of my friends and I are going back to Pas for the third time.

Frosty the Snowman, not my finest hour I admit but the deal we got is so good it would have made me sick to my stomach if I hadn't stretch the credit card just a little bit more. Just praying for snow now.

Nothing wrong with Grandvallira - some great cruisy runs there!
Also the nightlife in Pas is awesome!
