Poster: A snowHead
|
One day I hope to tour the European ski resorts, I've been looking for a ski map of Europe to plan a route but can't seem to find one anywhere. The closest I've come is French alps map, Austrain alps etc. wondering if anyone can help? I'm also curious see see which resorts are close to each other just for curiosities sake
Thanks

Jones82, welcome to snowheads. Any map with all the European ski resort on would have to be such a small scale as to be impossible to read - they spread over an enormous area, from Scandinavia down the middle of Italy and from Spain in the west to Romania in the east. In the main ski areas the resort names would all be on top of each other.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

even a map of just French resorts would be a bit unmanageable - there are over 200.

Haha oh well, I'll just have to spend a holiday in each country for a week every year until I get a better understanding of the regions... Now you've put it like that, it could be a lifetime endeavour

Are you in North America? ..there are so many resorts and so many big ski areas. How long have you got? You would not be able to "tour the European ski resorts" in one season let alone a few weeks! Just checked how many French resorts are listed on snowforecast.com- answer- 183. Am sure many members of the forum could let you have info to assist which places are close, which are the better places to head for and where you might go next from one to another. So for example, you could go to the Portes du soleil, to the grand Massif, then Megeve, then Chamonix, then Courmayeur, then somewhere further into Italy; or in another direction, Villars, Verbier, Saas Fee, Zermatt....then go via Zurich to st Anton and Austria, or from Megeve, another route to the 3v, La Plagne, Les Arcs, Val D'Isere (but then you would have to turn around and go back the way you came)....

You could spend a week getting to know just one ski area.

Jones82, you've possibly left it too late to do it in your lifetime but you could have fun trying.

Jones82, I spent seven weeks in just the North part of Austria on the Super Salzburg pass. That gave me 22 regions with lord knows how many resorts, I managed to ski about 20 odd resorts, with way above that number still to be visited.
You have a lot of fun to come Something like the 3 Valleys in France, Tignes/Val D, les Arcs or Chamonix could each last you a good week of skiing, Verbier in Switzerland also has another couple of resorts linked to it. If you visit somewhere for a two week trip it may be worth sticking to the places that have linked resorts on the same lift pass and just concentrate on that area, then next season do a different country. I'd suggest trying to pack too many resorts in during one trip could waste a lot of your time travelling, plus day tickets work out a little more expensive.

I remember seeing a poster-sized map of the Alps for sale in Innsbruck. It was a (approx 30-45deg) view from the North and had every major resort along with terrain...sort of 3D. If anybody's seen it for sale, pls let us know.
Jones82, you might find it useful.
