Hi all,
I bought a set of boots that were properly fitted. They're a very close fit and on the whole feel really good, but I get a bit of discomfort in a couple of areas and get pains especially in the side of my feet after taking them off lasting for maybe 10 mins - in short, a little way to go still.
I'm in a resort where there seem to be a couple of decent fitters who'll do the adaptions, but I need to know how long I need to wait before heading on in and making the shell irreperably larger? I've probably only skiied in them for 5 days so far - how much more is the liner likely to pack out? I'm concerned about ruining the good work already put in selecting a close fitting shell by going and blowing it wide open before they've properly settled down.
They're Salomon Quest 120s if that helps.

I think a liner needs around 10 or so days to fully adapt to your foot, so maybe 5 days is a bit early. How is the shell fit? You could ask the store/fitter to warm the liners up a bit to speed up the bedding in process a bit.

I'm happy getting a specific pressure point sorted after one days skiing. More general discomfort may be due to many factors, foot beds, socks, technique etc so the fitter needs to know what they are doing, plus you need to know how to effectively communicate what is going on with your feet.

jiagedaping, were they proper;y fitted in the first place (i.e. t's most unlikely that you have feet that are the exact shape of the liners of your boots). If not, they were not properly fitted. This question includes were the liners heat molded? Your model of boot looks to have a thermo fit liner I think. It may even have an entirely thermo fit shell (Mine do). Mine were properly fitted and were a right manky old jaikie to ski in for the first couple of days but have been lovely since (a few re stretches around an odd foot extension).
Also bear in mind that. for example, blowing out in some places is unlikely to degrade performance but might greatly enhance comfort.

They were fitted by a very highly regarded fitter, yes. I won't name him because doing so without showing him the boots himself would be a discourtesy. I've got to use someone else now because I'm moved location since I bought them.
Seems like I need to ski a bit more, and then look at getting some work done. Looks like tomorrow will be a case of grinning and bearing it! They actually feel very good when on, it's just when I take them off I get crippling pain for about 10 mins, then a bit of bruising around the fleshy part of my foot which lasts for a day or so. Start of season, so I'm not skiing consecutive days yet.

jiagedaping, I would get them done now, from experience you can damage your feet quite quickly.

I'd just opened up snowheads to research this ! Got some Fischer Vaccums fitted and after around 4 hours of skiing I had pretty bad (even causing me to grimace!) discomfort/pain down the right side of my foot, but might 'man up' and ski through it rather than going to get them remoulded before the next trip ! I'll call up the ski shop (Blue's Edinburgh) tomorrow and see what they say, I had been told to expect discomfort for a few days but that they would eventually 'pack out'

I was put in pretty stiff race boots with a foam injected liner. I had 90% comfort the first days skiing, then two small areas blown out overnight, from then on they've been perfect. Seven years ago the previous incarnation of Sole Boot lab in Cham did the same for me but in standard liners.
jiagedaping, It sounds more like your feet may just be rebelling against being stuck in a ski boot. If they are comfy when on then the general fit sounds pretty good. If the fleshy sore bit is on the outside of your foot behind the little toe then this should be very simple to blow out. Or try the thinnest race socks you can get, they are all you actually need, ski socks work better the thinner they are, it's the liner that provides warmth and padding.

jiagedaping, 5 days in my experience is long enough to know that something needs tweaked.

sounds like they need just a touch of space on the lateral border, you say the pain is when you take the boot off, is it there when you ski too? if the answer is no then it is only a very slight stretch, but difficult to say without seeing the boot
under a new name, for your information, (seeing as you like nothing more to have a dig) i worked on the boots, doing a pair of footbeds and quick heat up, but we did not supply them and did not have time on the day to do anything more than was done, as the appointment was squeezed in between others to help the client out as when he had come to me i did not have a suitable boot left in stock
that is of course assuming it is the only pair of Quest 120 that i have fitted in the past 2 years

CEM, who's having a dig? I like many more things than having a dig. Leffe for example.
- I asked if he OP really had had them properly fitted as it could, from initial info have been at, say, Slush'n'rubble by a hungover student
- I mentioned my boots which were properly fitted by a well known SOLE brother and described my experience of a well fitted boot (not always super perfect first time, just needs a few tweaks)
Back in your cage you varmint!!

CEM, huh?
Were they properly fitted in the first place? OP gave no info on this other than his own opinion that they were. I also think it's most unlikely that he has feet the exact shape of the liners of his boots. I probably confused things by not being clear that all I was asking was whether they had actually been properly "fitted" as we refer to round these parts, as opposed to "fitted" as considered in my local shoe shop. Put that down to rushed typing.
If OP had said up front that 'twas you, I wouldn't even have questioned it!!

Hi all,
CEM - not the fitting you recalled, as I said I'm unwilling to name the fitter as I feel it's unfair to do so without giving them the chance to sort the fit out themselves - something I'm sure any of the names frequently mentioned on here would be able to do. Having said that, you fitted my sister recently with a pair of Dalbello Kyra 95s - apparently she's got the 2nd worst instep you've ever seen!
Popped in today to one of the local shops that seemed to know what they were doing. Even though the Quest 120s I've got aren't full custom shell, they did a full oven bake rather than just go for the problem area with a heat gun. Bit of foam at the pressure areas and a really tight buckle while the shell was warm - they feel a lot more comfortable now - let's hope not too comfortable! Should be able to ski again Monday or Tuesday so will report back then.
