Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hi all

Am heading out to Red Mountain and Whitewater at end of Feb, hoping to sample some of the legendary backcountry in Whitewater and have some cat skiing booked in Red, anyone have any suggestions for rental shops with good gear in either resort.

Am iching to go now!

Good choice going to Red and Whitewater. I've rented the last 2 years when going out there. Unless I missed something, there wasn't a ton of choice in terms of rental shops and skis. Here's the best I found:

At Red, the selection at Red rentals was pretty good. But if you're dead set on a specific ski, might want to call them 1-2 days out based on the forecast.

At Whitewater, they have a decent selection of skis at the mountain, but not a lot, so you might want to call ahead and see what they have and reserve a pair based on the forecast. They had some Armadas and Rossis and other stuff. In Nelson, ROAM shop has a good selection of Kastle, Black Diamond and even a few DPS skis. Again, probably worth calling ahead and seeing what they have and booking something.

Any other questions about Red or Whitewater let me know.

Hi marcs

Thanks for the advice, it did appear to me that there wasn't a great deal of choice, hence the shout out to see if anyone had a secret shop. I had seen ROAM and there rates were a little better than the mountain so was going to try there.

Any op advice for either resort, we are staying in central Nelson at the Hume and then in condos at Red in the village. Did you drive up from Nelson each day or get the shuttle bus?

Hey,

We stayed at the Hume both times in Nelson. Good spot. Some of the floors have renovated rooms so ask for that.

We drove up to the mtn each day so can't comment on the shuttle.

I would also hit Ainsworth Hot Springs north of Nelson one day after skiing.

Here's a detailed trip report from our 1st trip out there in 2012.

Also, if you're interested in side/back country, look into Mt Roberts at Red. Probably want to get a guide or a friendly local to show you the way though.
