Going to Zell am See for a week on the 21st December. Any tips on non ski activities worth trying?

I was there for Christmas last year. On Christmas Eve there is a rather strange show/ritual on the lakeside by the Grand Hotel where the local lads go diving for a Christmas tree (or something). It's all narrated in German with flaming torches etc and ends with a few half decent fireworks.

not so much an activity, but there is an excellent pizzaria there on the opposite side of town to the ski lifts. Can't remember its name, apologies.

The lift company has walking/snowshoeing activities during the day. It's a free service.
A long walk around the lake is great. There is also a good indoor swimming pool in town along with an ice rink. If you really want to pamper yourself there's a fantastic spa near Kaprun - not cheap.
Zell has a mainline railway station. It is easy to have day trips to Salzburg, Innsbruck and at a stretch Munich.
Zell also has loads of Restaurants and Cafes.
Just a few ideas - however you can go to the Tourist information there. They are very helpful.

zellski, Take the train into Salzburg and savour the Christmas Markets in the Old Town (Altstadt), then go over the the one in the New Town around Linzergasse and Mirabelplatz.

Any particular recommendations for Tauren spa? Do you need to book? Also is there anything on for Xmas eve/Xmas day? Staying in Seevilla freiberg.

They used to do a ski show one evening at the bottom of the City Xpress lift. There was also one in Kaprun at the Maiskogel that was less busy. Not been for a few years so can't confirm details but worth a watch.

Yep. Plenty of it and it snowed quite heavily on one of the days.
But that was last year.

I hope you're taking lessons!
The runs down to Zell are the more difficult runs, so I would advise taking the lifts down.

Ditto the taking lesson and down loading sentiment form zellmaniac.
Off round the corner to Saalbach this weekend for most of the season , but usually drive over to Zell for the odd morning skiing to take in the fantastic views.
Enjoy your first skiing holiday , it could become an addiction !!!

yes I have ski school booked. I think its 2 hours for 5 days so might get a private lesson or two as well. Any recommendations for this? also has anyone done the day trip to the glaciaer? how long does it take and when is the best time to go. Will also try to get to the Tauern spa.

Ski bus runs regularly to the glacier. Go on a day where the weather is reasonable....you don't want to be up there in a hoolie

Good idea to find out where the ski school meeting place is prior to your first lesson's. Also make a check list of what you need to take each morning so you do not get to the meeting place without gloves /sunscreen or items you may need , knowing where your hotel is situated its a fair walk to where the ski schools usually meet up if you forget anything.

The bus to the glacier takes about half an hour from Zell. However, I expect all your classes will be on the local Zell slopes. A visit to the glacier (except just to see the scenery up there; there's a tunnel with exhibits about the National Park Hohe Tauern that has a viewing platform at the end) probably only makes sense once you are a reasonably confident intermediate skier. Beginners do sometimes go up there when there is no snow in the valleys but the beginner areas are relatively restricted and you would want to know where exactly to go. Enjoy your trip!

I agree with espri, - no need to waste your time travelling to the glacier if there is snow on the Zell slopes. You'd be better off putting in the practice. Would also agree that the runs down to town are not really beginners territory especially at the end of the day when your legs are shot away. There is no shame in riding the bubble back down.
