www.j2ski.com , proprietor j2dave, has Google Maps with European ski resorts marked, here's Austria for example. I'm not sure the placements are entirely correct though, Ellmau seems to have wandered over to Salzburg airport, rather than hanging around with the rest of Ski Welt!
Cool toy though!

J2Dave,
I think it's definitely a great idea, but various things in life lead me to believe I'm not normal.

Mauterndorf has moved too.

Wengen, Murren and Grindelwald in Switzerland are slightly out the Wengen ballon needs to move about 1/2km NE, Murrens needs to go perhaps 1/2km to the SE whilst Grindelwalds needs to go perhaps 1km WNW

Ian Hopkinson, thanks.
snowHeads, that site is a really good one. Have a look at it - not just the new Google mapping part, which is sometimes a bit disappointing (not J2Dave's fault - Google just doesn't zoom in close enough to a couple of the French resorts I tried).

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

J2Dave,
Love the site - think it is a really good tool for all and wannabe independently minded ski travellers.
One observation that I have - the algo's for measuring time and distance from Stuttgart airport to resorts seems to be inaccurate (ref. Stuttgart to Flachau - per website 1.5 hours, per mappy - 427km & 4 hours+, Stuttgart to Villach - per website 1 hour, per mappy - 545km & 5 hours+)
I have used your site on many other occasions for excellent and spot-on information - just thought i'd put in my 2p worth - hope you don't mind

Have you looked at plotting things onto google earth?
http://earth.google.com/
you can do stuff like this....
(click for more) (Then try and find the tiny "all sizes button")
Which is a GPS trace of a day out on the Grand Montet.

kuwait_ian, ...hopefully Google will be enhancing the European map coverage in the New Year... but that's hopeful rumour rather than known fact!
doogo, thanks - comments much appreciated! I'll add those locations to my to-do list...
fragglerock, yes... defo looking at cool stuff like that for the future; response times and server loads start to become a bit of a challenge with all the GPS and/or mapping technologies but we have some cunning plans...
...and for anyone waiting for our Snow Forecast e-mail; the GFS data got held up yesterday and we also wanted to see how the "interesting" predictions for later in the week solidified a bit. We should get it out tonight though.

J2Dave, going back to your map of Austria, you've got Nassfeld where Bad Gastein should be! Nassfeld is further south, in Carinthia.

J2Dave, I realise you may be in the hands of Google on this but for France the balloons on the map sometimes show relatively small resorts (e.g. Vaujany) but when you zoom in you get it's bigger relation Alpe d'Huez popping into existence. Serre Chevalier seems to have been nuked.

doogo, it appears we had Stuttgart in the wrong place... just as well Lufthansa aren't using our maps... ok, talk amongst yourselves as we interrupt this broadcast... we can rebuild it.
Later... Dave

Stuttgart is now in the right place (zoom in and see the runway!), and various other above-mentioned locations have got up and moved too... thanks for the feedback guys.

Thinking about it Serre Che is going to be a problem since really there is no such place. It's just a name for a collection of villages and linked skiing areas spread out along the valley and the hills.

lampbus, that's an excellent toy! What GPS do you have?

Ian Hopkinson, Garmin etrex vista C. Good readable colour display. no complaints except only 24 meg of memory so it will only hold a few map tiles - eg northern england OR london area (higher road density). V.good battery life.
The track log is 10K points which is about 2-3 days of my style of skiing so If I want to record more then I need to download the track to a PC daily.

lampbus, do you use it mainly for outdoor pursuit type stuff or on road navigation?
It looks like a great way of mapping pistes and lifts, and it also has a good data hound appeal.
