Normally carry prove and shovel in hold baggage but am trying to get the weight down to below 20kg. Anyone ever had any problems with security in getting a probe (or shovel for that matter) through the scanners? Packing tonight so no need to reply after today. Thanks.

If a probe is going to affect your hold weight . . . time to rethink what you're taking. Transceiver in cabin, probe (potential weapon) in hold to be on the safe side. Screening is a lottery.

I'd take less clothes, or wear more on the flight. The weight of a probe and shovel is minimal and probably within the accuracy of the scales. I'd expect hassle trying to get them through as hand luggage. You could always try wearing your helmet if things are that tight

Probes are really light. Never taken one in hand baggage though, please report back. I have taken monopods, and they don't blink about those. I guess you could email them to ask, but I'd not risk it myself. Those guys think contact lens solution which I offer to drink in front of them is a weapon...

I take full avi kit, about 2kg of glucose gels, muesli bars and dextrose tablets (I'm diabetic), off piste kit, avi bag, etc etc and still come under 20kg. MTFU
