Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski testing in resort - any tips for saving cash?

 Poster: A snowHead

Hi all,

Decided it's time to get new skis, and intending to buy in resort at Christmas. So, (stupid punter question alert) what's the deal with getting a demo/test from a sport shop? I'd like to try 5 or 6 skis over the week before making a decision, so is there any way of getting a discount, or would I have to pay premium ski rental rate for each day, and then the full purchase price on my chosen pair? Any tips on the best way to play it? And if anyone can recommend a good shop in Val D'Isere, I'd be grateful. Ta.

Dave

This would be regarded as standard practice in the US for at least 3 days rental credited to cost of skis. I suspect France might be a different matter especially with punters ringing the cashtills over the Xmas period. Email your chosen shop in advance and negotiate it would be best I'd guess.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

check for test/demo centres. My son demo'd 4 or 5 snowboards in New Zealand last year and we only paid the insurance to guard against loss/theft/breakage. We were in Val d in April but can't offer much help on ski shops. Our hotel had it's own rental shop. Incidentally they had several sets of demo/test skis.

Dave Burt,

I've told a ski shop in Val D that I wanted to buy skis and they said fine, try it and we will deduct the hire charge if you buy, so I did and they did. I can't remember the shop tho' but it was on the slope side of the High St and well stocked with Brits. I think they had a few new ski schools in the mini mall type group of shops there....!!!

Thats the best I can do as it was years and years ago...someone might recognise it though and be able to name it

It's unusual for them to charge for hire if you subsequently buy. We just tested and bought this afternoon - two pairs (gulp) - and were given what will end up as about 20% discount (once the VAT is deducted etc) because we bought 2 pairs, and didn't have to pay any hire charge. We tested about 4 skis each in an afternoon. TBH we were so happy with the ones we bought, that we wouldn't have needed longer anyway
