Poster: A snowHead
|
In August 2001 Hermann 'Hermannator' Maier almost destroyed a leg in a motorbike crash near Radstadt in Austria. How he recovered from injuries that could have prevented him from walking ... let alone regaining a ski racing career ... let alone winning the overall World Cup title (which he achieved last winter) ... is the stuff of miracle and legend.
This article on Hermann Maier's secrets to rebuilding strength and fitness has a very interesting introduction on the importance of stationary cycling and lactate levels in the blood ... along with an exercise programme he works to.
It's on the Skiing Magazine site.
Would a member of the fitness fraternity care to comment on this info?

very interesting and very scientific re. blood tests via ear lobe. So much conflicting info re. right exercises for skiing. I just started my year long training to do my first Eurotest in season 2006/07 - got the weights, now can't get the car in the garage and started to SQUAT - heavy weights every 48hrs - hopefully will sort out my chickens - "like twa bits o string hanging fi an orange" as a teacher once remarked

Good luck with the training dq3 - I'm going for it too, and not too far away now. I was training in the summer and some hotshot 14/15 yr olds with tiny legs were skiing well inside eurotest level. I reckon with the right technique you don't need to be huge, well conditioned legs will seriously help though - something i've been a wee bit lazy with of late.....My next test is Jan. - we'll see.
Take it you've done the gym session at Glenmore on CT course...I've been doing squats regularly since too!!

I'm wondering how many other racers will follow his example? it would be interesting to know. At one point recently the French team stopped using the gym and just did lots of ski-ing - clearly it didn't work, so I hear they're now back in the gym.

I've been using Maiers low intensity trainning methods for a few weeks and although I was very sceptical it appears to working for me. I'm now passing some people in the Mountain Bike group who used to pass me on the hills.

I just tried something I read about from ski exercise links. Do light squats in front of a step or block and turn the upward movement into a jump up onto the step. Then jump back down being very careful to absorb any shock gently. Again... light bar on the shoulders.
