Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski racks to attach to roof bars

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hello all,

I have roof bars for my car and want to buy some sort of rack to attach to these to take my skis.

So far I have found these two:

Auto maxi ski kit - £75

http://www.motorack.com/product/238-automaxi-ski-kit/

And these:

Auto maxi lock-ski - £49.99

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AutoMaxi-Lock-Ski-Secure-Double-Ski-Holder-Rack-Car-Mount-Carrier-for-Roof-Bar-/120942880270?_trksid=p2054897.l4276

Neither of these is particularly aerodynamic, but the more expensive one looks much better.

Anyone know of any alternatives or used either of these?

Cheers

K

A few possibilities herekosciosco:

I've used a magnetic rack by Fapa for years - I bought it in Italy (where they were made) for about £35 - which (IIRC) was about half the UK price at the time. Excellent and fits any car without a glass sunroof. However, a Google search for them draws a blank - mustn't be available any more Puzzled - though I've seen them at car hire places abroad in recent times. An alternative (non-Fapa) is available here for £111, along with other ski-carrying possibilities:

I have (but only occasionally use) the Thule 746 which is super-quick to clip to the bars. When I've two passengers or less, the skis are always loaded inside the car though because

1. it's just easier.

and

2. road salt loves making a rusty mess of edges.

If possible put the skis inside the car, but if you have to put them on the roof duck tape plastic bags over the bindings. The thule racks are fine.

I use the Thule 746 ones and am perfectly happy with them - I did have a cheaper pair but I lent them to a friend who lost the key!

I only use them on days out in preference to putting wet skis in the car - driving a long distance (eg to the Alps/airport) skis go inside the car.

To yellow Pyranha I am sorry I didn't read your post before I posted as I have the Thule 6P 727 series ski racks. They are really worth buying great quality I think.

I have Thule Xtenders, but they're expensive - not worth it really, for the odd week here and there.

Kosciusko, what type of car do you have? If you have roof bars that go across the car then you will have to ensure whatever ski holder you consider will fit the roof bar profile. If the car has roof rails, running in line with the direction of travel of the car, then you may have to purchase bars too. Most car manufacturers retail vehicle specific racks but can be pricey - some even used rebadged Thule components.

I used the Thule 746 last year on the standard Thule square bars which worked well enough. When I changed my car, I had to get new bars (ended up with the Thule Wingbar Edge) and subsequently had big problems trying to find a ski rack that had enough height clearance for ski bindings. I ended up with the Atera Nova 6 Uplifted from roofbox.co.uk and have no complaints at all so far. It was also the most aerodynamic uplifted rack I could find.

Might I suggest a roof box. Fixes to the bars easily (latest Thule models use grabby units fixed using handles inside the box. Box is secure and aerodynamic (and can take skis and poles). More problematic to store when not in use, that's the only drawback (ok, cost too)
Something like this (fairly sure it's the model we have)
