Poster: A snowHead

Guys,
Can you please provide me with some info on whether there are any free lifts in the Val Thorens area? My son & his mates are out their for a week boarding & skiing in Mid Dec 2013. They are aiming to get a 6 day pass but they arrive in the resort mid to late morning & rather than kick their heels or get smashed in a bar...they thought they might get the ski legs on and get on the slopes in the afternoon. i have looked but the cost of a 1/2 day local pass, but it seems quite dear at €34.90, unless I got it wrong!
So can any of you helpful Snowheads advise me whether there are a) any free lifts in VT & b) what ones they are ?
Thanks in anticipation.

Ricay, the afternoon pass runs from 12.30pm so that's 4 hours skiing 150km for £29. Compare that with a UK Snowdome and then tell me it's crap value! 4 hours in a pub in VT will probably cost them more than that so they might as well go skiing.
Anyway, rant aside, the only free lifts are the 3 magic carpets and the short Roc drag in the Green beginner zones in the centre. They're marked on the piste map. http://www.latania.co.uk/photos/2013/info/PisteMaps2013/ValThorens2013.pdf
Should keep them busy for at least 10 minutes so well worth saving the cash

Raceplate is right, the carpet lifts will bore them after 10 minutes.
Having spent that much getting there and staying there I would have thought the 1/2 day ski pass is good value. If they ar elike many youngsters they will only get 1/2 day skiing most days in as they wont get up till noon.

Ricay, €34.90 is about what it costs to get smashed in Val Thorens

You'll need to Register first of course.

A single large beer could easily cost E7.50 So, as mentioned above, for the cost of about 4 beers they could ski the afternoon.

Just to throw in another option - there is also a beginners pass which is half the price of an afternoon pass (so around £15ish) which covers the 2 Lacs chairs and the Cairn and Caron bubbles.. That will give them access to most of the greens, a few nice blues (Gentiane, Hermine, Cairn, Chalets), and potentially even the boarder cross run if they're feeling adventurous.
If they're only skiing for an hour or two, then there's enough there to keep them amused - anything longer and they should definitley consider the full half day pass. The free slopes aren't worth considering IMO, they'll be bored after 10 minutes!

Handy Turnip, Thanks for that option....that sounds more reasonable cost to me anyway. I will tell the boy about this other option when he gets back from footie.

I'm staying at the Val T UCPA xmas week, getting there about 3pm so was wondering if I could get a cheeky 30-60 min on the slopes.
I wouldn't mind just sliding around in the beginner zone for that shorter time but looking at google maps am I right in thinking I'd need to walk up to the town from the UCPA to get to any of the free lifts?

Daishan, no mate, you just walk along a short road and then slide down to a couple of chair lifts. Its almost ski in/ out.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Which you then can't get on because they're not free....

Yes, you need to walk up although there's probably a free bus too. If It's possible to walk through the car park opposite and past the ice race track it's probably only about 250m to the bottom of the first free lift, Musaraigne, which is opposite the Peclet Funitel station.
