Poster: A snowHead

Hi,
I'm looking for some advice on the best places to ski tour near to the US West coast in May. We're heading out that way and have been looking at the Sierra High Route.
The ski tour companies are very positive, but then they would be wouldn't they? Given it's too soon to comment on this season, I'd rather not commit only to find ourselves walking about the mountains with skis on our backs.
Are there any views/thoughts/advice on what the conditions are typically like at that time of year and what might be good alternatives?

Check TGR for the Eastern Sierra thread which usually has the best beta on how long stuff remains skiable. Historic dates on opening of Tioga Pass are a good proxy inidcator of snow pack. There's also Lassen, Crater Lake area, further afield Glacier NP is usually really good late I understand - certainly non drivable when I visited in early May once.

I've skied Glacier National Park, Montana top to bottom the first week in June.
Great corn snow and amazing views.
Also done Mt St Helens and Mt Adams, Washington State in late May.
In a normal winter the high peaks of the West (Rockies, Cascades, Sierras) are good until the end of June.

Hi, I've skied in Mammoth and Tahoe (Heavenley - twice) in mid April on each occasion and the whole mountains were still open. Also visited Mammoth towards the end of May (didn't ski but the slopes were still open).

Did the Sierra High Route in early May '97 - 1wk Mammouth to Yosemite (no huts so big packs!) then second week from Yosemite north to Twin Lakes with one night in a hut at Tuolumne Meadows. Excellent skiing conditions, but quite a hike from snow-level down to Yosemite - also need to be bear aware at that time of the year!!!

There's some great helicopter assisted back county touring in the Cascades of central washington. Probably a better chance of having snow in May further north than the Sierras.
