Israeli ski resort expands terrain and lift capacity

Mt. Hermon, Israel's only ski resort, has recently invested over 1 million dollars in upgrades, including doubling capacity on the top chairlift. The resort has also opened up new ski terrain. The mountain, which is located on the Golan Heights, attracts up to 6000 people a day, although only a third of them ski or board, the remainder sightseeing and enjoying the snow.

DailySnow.com reports that the location involved, which is on the Israeli border, may be included in the much discussed 'land for peace' proposals. The resort is in "constant contact" with the Israel Defense Force's elite Alpine Unit which patrols the area. There are 45 kilometres of ski trails, five chairlifts and several T-bars.

The resort is operated by residents of the nearby village of Neve Ativ where lodging and après ski facilities are based. Many of the resort' ski instructors and lift operators come from the Israeli Arab village of Magdal Champs which is located on the Israel Syrian border.

"The Israeli Neve Ativ and Arab Magdal Champs communities are very close. They actually serve as a model of real time co-existence between Israelis and Arabs." A source told the Israel News Agency.
