Are we ever going to see articial resorts which have little expectation of real snow, but are maintained with battalions of cannons? Kind of like a big MK but outside on a cold hill? Be interesting to see which resorts rely the most on snowmaking.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

michael stocking, you can already see it, in the lower areas of the PdS for example snowmaking seems to be a permament feature.

michael stocking, try almost anywhere on the US east coast...OK maybe I'm being a bit harsh, but...
also Courmayeur, most of the Aosta Valley, etc. These places are cold-sure, not snow-sure.
David@traxvax, and thank goodness for that! Actually, isn't snow making a bit of a permanent feature in most resorts on lower runs these days?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

If you have a rising snowline, artificial snowmaking is clearly a stop-gap measure. It certainly can't save skiing in the long term. Urgent but long-term attention to re-adjusting the atmosphere's content of CO2 and other greenhouse gases could help us save this sport.

Snowmaking is a fact of ski industry life, and a great realief to everyone involved. However it is very expensive to install, run and maintain, and is probably not good for the environment due to the extra energy used. The situation Wear The Fox Hat, refers to above is different though. the problem is not snowmaking, but the recycled water they're proposing to use. As far as I understand it the Indian Nations concerned don't have a problem with fresh water, but consider the recycled water "dirty" and therefore an affront to their sacred mountain.
Off topic: IMHO more skiers should spend time in the mountains in the summer/autumn to see the enormous amount of work (not to mention investment) that goes into creating the best possible holiday week for them.
