 Poster: A snowHead

I have recently moved to Madrid and obviously I will be withouht snow for long periods. I know there are some small "resorts" about an hour out of the city but I know little or nothing about them. If anyone has any advice or ideas on these areas please let me hear them.
I will also be looking to do some weekend trips to different parts of Spain and the pyrenees in search of some nice snow, cheap accomodation and everything else that goes with a ski weekend. Again any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

dugg139, for Baqueira try www.baqueira.co.uk operated by some English friends who now live in the Valley. A little further down the valley there is an excellent B&B in Salardu.
A little closer is Boi Taull which would save you maybe 30 mins on the drive.

dugg139, I lived in Madrid for a couple of years in the mid 90s and I can promise you that on clear winter days you will see the snow. You may even get some in the city once in a while but mostly it is off in the Sierra, as you say an hour or so out of the centre. Unfortunately I cannot comment on the quality of the local resorts as I had not yet started skiing when I lived there but I did go up to the mountains and can confirm that they exist. The weather can be a bit unreliable so you would probably not want to travel far, but being based in Madrid you should be able to get some day trips in if you are flexible and only decide to go the night before. Cotos is the name that I remember and I think that there are a couple of others.

Stop in Jaca (old fortress town) and then you are within half an hour of Formigal (great intermediate resort - a lot of skiing) and Astun and Kandanchu - both 'day resorts'. If you can - go mid week the Spanish culture is for weekend skiing (saving holiday for the 4 week summer break) the slopes are rammed Sat and Sun - but mid week can be bliss. Jaca is less than 4 hours from Madrid.

I have a place in southern Spain and only just started skiing last year
and so have no experience of other ski resorts, I have an hours drive up to the Sierra Nevadas above Granada which I can say is very popular and packed to the gunnels in Spains holiday periods. I met people from all over Spain and Portugal, and a lot of people from Madrid who had driven down for weekends. It's about a 3 hour drive from Madrid and I would say you will find plenty of reasonable accommodation in and around Granada, it takes about 25 miniutes to drive up to the resort from Granada, Last year was one of the best years they have had for snow up there for 10 years apparently and the season was extended by a couple of weeks. As for snow in Madrid, I drove down to my place last February and got snowbound in Madrid for a night, Madrid is on a plateau at about 2000 feet I saw mountains full of snow and would not be suprised if there was not some facilities close by
