Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Wanted: a new operator for Cairngorm ski area

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
The mountain that turned Aviemore into a ski resort is, once again, facing a change of operating company. Highlands and Islands Enterprise, which built Cairngorm's funicular railway and owns the whole enterprise (currently managed by its subsidiary Cairngorm Mountain Ltd) ... wants a new operator to take over ...

I guess that they have been waiting for a good season, to try and make the opportunity a bit more attractive; also the hope that the economy might have reached the lowest point and will therefore look better for investors.

May need to keep them on separate sides of the mountain.
But we could have each run named after a thread?
The restaurant and shop could be 'Classifieds'.

Ricklovesthepowder, Less than a quid, probably into golden hello territory and HIE will heave a huge sigh of relief. Whoever takes it on will need to invest, need to hedge against bad winters, need to take on liabilities (like staff, leases etc) and probably need a slush fund for legal because anything they do that has any potential environmental impact is sure to get challenged. Personally I think it should be community run and not for profit (because it probably won't make one anyway). But, this being the ski biz, there are people nutty enough and I'm told there are half a dozen or so expressions of interest already. Buying a season ticket is a better deal than owning the place though.

The Scotsman ran this story on Monday about Cairngorm's future ...

http://www.scotsman.com/news/scottish-news/top-stories/search-on-for-new-cairngorms-operator-1-2819629

There's also been some lively discussion on Winterhighland about this ...

http://www.winterhighland.info/forum/read.php?2,154816,page=1

Clearly some brilliant innovative thinking, financial brilliance and action are needed to assure Cairngorm's future as a ski mountain. It's enjoying a thriving winter now, with great conditions, but the uplift situation (now that all the chairlifts are gone or defunct, with several t-bars/tows removed) remains less complete than it was in the 1970s. This is ironic, because Cairngorm always gets the biggest visitor numbers of all the Scottish centres ... but none of the others has cut back in this way.

The Operations team on Cairngorm have been widely praised this winter for keeping the lifts rolling. They are often dug out (that's the lifts, not the lifties) very early in the morning, after big storms. Back-breaking work, often involving big drifts at the mouth of the funicular tunnel (the train goes underground just before it reaches the top station).

Donald Trump does, indeed, appear to be a skier as well as a golfer ... though one can't always believe what one reads on the internet. Here's Ben Hart of escapetyranny.com, about the day he says he encountered Donald Trump at the top of Aspen Mountain:

My Odd Personal Experience with Donald Trump
http://www.escapetyranny.com/2011/04/23/my-odd-personal-experience-with-donald-trump/

Clearly [legal point] I can't vouch for whether that story is true, or a load of golfballs. The lady referred to - Marla Maples - has a Wikipedia page, with another skiing reference ...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marla_Maples

Quote:
Maples secretly dated Donald Trump for nearly two years starting 1986 while Trump was still married to Ivana Trump. The affair was discovered by Ivana in 1991, when she confronted Maples on a ski slope in Aspen, Colorado. The spat was well chronicled by the media and led to Ivana filing for divorce from Donald Trump.

Donald Trump on Cairngorm? Now, that would be a rich photo opportunity!

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person
The 140,000 skier day figure across the five areas was from the mid-period of half term. Since the weekend CairnGorm Mountain has broken the 75,000 skier day figure for the season to date. Worth noting that puts the current financial year which ends on 31st March at 97,000 skier days (with 22,000 notched up last April and May - those predominantly in late April and May too!).

Comedy Goldsmith, And it was all so good until he mentioned Obama, Trump and birther conspiracies.

But if he buys Cairngorm we can all try and take him out by the kneecaps.

WTF Ski Club newsflash on this [via our London Link-monkey team] ...

IMPORTANT ... tomorrow Monday ...

... with the future operations of Cairngorm still to be determined ...

... if you're in the Aviemore area ...

HIE to hold information day on search for new operator at Cairngorm
http://www.hie.co.uk/about-hie/news-and-media/archive/hie-to-hold-information-day-on-search-for-new-operator-at-cairngorm.html

Of course, Cairngorm has a far wider user catchment than Aviemore itself, so hopefully HIE will canvas opinion and share its knowledge widely. Cairngorm is a key resource in Britain's ski fabric.
