Two competing ski show operators are currently planning two different ski shows - one at Birmingham (NEC), the other at Manchester (Event City) - on identical dates next autumn: 25-27 October 2013.
It's all a big war between 'In the Snow Live' - which has obtained a slot at the NEC formerly taken by the Ski and Snowboard Show - and 'Ski and Snowboard Show North' which has upped sticks to move from Birmingham to Manchester. Here are the players ...

Comedy Goldsmith, sorry, but your sources are clearly wrong.
The Manchester show is being organised by VOS Media (who run the London show). Global Snow Shows who ran the British Ski & Snowboard Show at the NEC, currently do not have a show as their slot at the NEC was given to InTheSnow magazine.
The Manchester show seems to have already snaffled a bunch of the bigger exhibitors and I reckon the B'ham show will struggle to fill all that space profitably. Also the audience will be split. those who used to travel from the south side of Manchester to B'ham will obviously probably not bother.

Thanks for clarifying and correcting that, Swiller.
So are Global Snow Shows going to set up a third ski show for 25-27 October ... on a 'third show lucky' basis?

feef, agreed. TRavelling to Birmingham by anything other than car (i.e. train) was expensive. As there is also ChillFactor in the area, many might do both.

The world needs less ski shows not more. From what I'm hearing the Manchester show is rapidly snaffling all the key exhibitors. Reckon B'ham might be a difficult show to put on.

there is of course also London Freeze which will probably fall onto that weekend as well, people cannot split themselves into 2 or 3 for that matter so something has to give!

A new twist - London and Manchester Ski Shows now in the hands of The Telegraph:
Quote: |
Telegraph acquires VOS Media
Telegraph Media Group, publisher of The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Telegraph, The Telegraph and The Telegraph weekly world edition, has announced that it has acquired a majority equity interest in VOS Media Ltd.
Damian Norman, Managing Director of VOS Media, retains a minority equity stake.
VOS Media Ltd produces events such as Ski & Snowboard Show, The Outdoors Show, The London Bike Show, The Active Travel Show, and the Vitality Show as well as publishing the Ski & Snowboard magazine. Annually, VOS Media's shows attract over 100,000 visitors, says the company.
Dave King, Executive Director, TMG, said: “I am delighted that we are adding VOS Media’s event expertise to the Telegraph portfolio. It is a natural extension for our brand, driving a new revenue stream. Our readers, advertisers and customers will be able to experience a wide range of shows across a number of events which will continue to bring greater value to a growing Telegraph audience.”
Damian Norman, Managing Director, VOS Media, said: "Having enjoyed a very successful media partnership with Telegraph Media Group across our Ski, Outdoors and Bike divisions, during which we identified clear synergies between our customers and clients alike, we are now delighted to be part of one of the UK’s leading publishers. I look forward to growing our existing events, publishing and media portfolio, whilst expanding into further complimentary market sectors that support customers and clients of TMG."
Graham Horner, Marketing Director, TMG, said: "The acquisition of VOS Media offers Telegraph readers and subscribers access to a wide range of first–rate events, and provides us with a new platform to engage audiences with our brand." |

I have long held the view, for about the past two minutes, that Battersea Power Station should be converted into Battersea Powder Station.

I was wondering about Freeze this weekend actually. As eddiethebus mentions, the impending development of a ridiculous number of expensive flats and townhouses at Battersea means that it will be shortly without a venue. Will it find another venue, or just fold?

1.) Harry Flashman, +1
2.) It was utterly predictable that a thread about a North/South divide devolved into one about grammer and education.
3.) My money's on the TMG/VOS event given that they can offer their participants reduced ad rates in a national press relese, a 'special' ski edition AND they run a shed load of personal ski ads in season.

Comedy Goldsmith, it's only March so not surprising that the Manchester show isn't being bigged up to the public yet. I'd say the next few months will be very interesting because there simply aren't enough exhibitors out there to fill two shows on the same week-end. And without exhibitors there's not much for the paying public to go and see. One of those shows won't make it. Shirley.

The Ski Show War heats up. Now it's Telegraph v. Times:

Press release: 2 May 2013
InTheSnow Live announce Media Partnership with News International
InTheSnow Live, the snowsports show taking place at the NEC this autumn, has signed a significant deal with media giants, News International, as the official national media sponsor of the show.
The deal will see InTheSnow Live partner with five News International titles: The Times, Times Plus, Sunday Times, The Sun and the Sunday Times Travel Magazine and will involve a 70,000 ticket giveaway on the front cover of Sunday Times Travel Magazine a month prior to the show.
This is the biggest ever national media partnership for a UK snowsports show and will mean the show will be visible to over 70% of the UK population. News International, the largest media group in the world, will run a programme of advertising and editorial across their titles which will be complimented by online coverage and emails to their audience of millions about InTheSnow Live.
The Times has 1.4 million readers
The Sunday Times has 2.6 million readers
The Sun has 7.5 million readers
Sunday Times Travel Magazine has an ABC of 69,207
72% of adults in Britain are in touch with News International titles or their related websites
More Sunday Times readers took a holiday in the last 12 months than readers of any other national quality Sunday newspaper (2,199,000).
More Sunday Times readers spent over £2500 on their last holiday than readers of any other national quality Sunday newspaper.
1,224,000 Times readers took a holiday or short break abroad over the last 12 months, a larger group than any other national quality daily newspaper.
6,266,000 Sun readers took a holiday in the last 12 months. More than readers of any other national daily newspaper.
Dominic Killinger, Managing Director of InTheSnow Live said of the deal: "The show's partnership with News International confirms the level at which InTheSnow Live is being run. This is the biggest media partner ever to engage with a UK ski show meaning InTheSnow Live will be exposed to millions of new people across the greatest range of media titles. This will of course bring a new audience to the show on top of the existing 20k footfall the show has built over the last 19 years."
InTheSnow Live takes place from 25-27 October 2013 at the NEC and will create a whole new type of ski show to attract new and existing skiers and snowboarders.
It will showcase real resort experiences from the smells of the food in the Alpine Kitchen, to the 'Fit to Ski' feature and the custom boot clinic. There will also be a live feed on the show's big screens of the first World Cup ski race of the season in Sölden, with commentary from BBC Ski Sunday's Graham Bell.
Other features include the luxurious two storey après ski bar, a winter wonderland for all the family, the ski fashion show and talk theatre and a huge £50,000 cash prize to be won at the show, allowing the lucky winner to take a ski holiday for life.
|
And both sides are claiming Graham Bell. There must be two of him.

Two months on ... and despite their press release of 2 May, the organisers of InTheSnow Live don't seem to feature a media partner on their website (can't see any mention of The Times/Sunday Times/Sun etc). On Twitter, though, a Tweet of 19 June ...

There's an ongoing direct clash of dates between InTheSnow Live (Birmingham NEC) and Ski and Snowboard Show North (Manchester EventCity). The latter seems to have The Telegraph confirmed as a media partner.
What gives - will both Birmingham and Manchester go ahead?
As an aside, I see that the SCGB is offering 50% off tickets for Birmingham: http://www.skiclub.co.uk/skiclub/news/story.aspx?storyID=8926#.UdGVHazrvOs . So I guess they will have a stand there, but what about Manchester?
