Poster: A snowHead

Those of you who have a hotel stopover and carry your gear in a roof box, do you leave it in there overnight or take it out? Having had all my gear nicked once from a transfer bus I get suitably twitchy about these things, just wondering if it's just me. We have usually got 3 sets of skis and a board in there plus boot bags

bagginsmum, we usually leave our stuff in there. Most of the hotel rooms we stay in are too small for all our gear and dogs to be in there too. We rarely stay in a location I would consider it to be a risk (such as a city centre) , and many of them have gates that are closed at night.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I know someone who had their roof box broken into in a French motorway services area. They actually stole really crappy old skis. I think that smaller hotels are pretty safe though. I'd take boots in with me though, skis can be replaced much more easily.

Avalanche Poodle, one reason I would never stay in a motorway services area overnight.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Worth noting is that insurance T&C's frequently state that if you leave your luggage/ski goods unattended* they may not be covered.
*Unattended meaning in a car outside a hotel and that kind of thing. Not my definition, theirs.

On the few occasions we had to have a stopover we used hotels with secure car park. I am too twitchy to leave my gear in unsecured car parks.

Try a rural b and b; very safe, often private locked parking, great value and fantastic breakfasts. On Thursday night the four of us will be staying near Dijon for 69 euro inc breakfast. I have stayed in castles, mills, even a cave, and on the way back we are staying in a converted pigeonnier ! I would never park overnight in a town or on a autoroute though.

We're staying in a Best western overnight at Chambery, anyone stayed there?

If it locks its gates it will be fine. Chambery town centre is well worth an evenings stroll round, especially the old town

zanarchist, many car policies have a very low limit for personal belongings, mine are covered by my house insurance.
