Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi folks
Friends of mine have booked a holiday in Saalbach in early Jan and we'd like to join them (myself and my son). I can get cheap flights to Munich and am researching accomodation but it is the transfer that seem to be the problem with the shuttle service not being cheap. Does anyone know of any not too expensive way of getting from Munich to Saalbach?
cheers
Jo

Train directly from Munich Airport to Zell am See, then either taxi or bus (depending on what time your arrival is). Have you tried Salzburg as your airport as the transfers will work out much cheaper and more frequent?

Samerberg Sue,
I didn't realise there was a direct train to ZAS from Munich. I thought this was via Salzburg.
I have never flown to Munich, is there a train station at the airport?
The Bad Armenian, As Sue syas Salzburg transfer is good value. There is a bus directly from the airport to Zell am See - a good and cheap option.

There is a rail station at Munich Airport.
There is no direct train to Zell an See - the routes involve two or three changes and are via Kufstein/Worgl, via Schwarzach-St Viet or via Salzburg.
There is also usually, but not always, a change required at Munich Ost.
It's all at http://fahrplan.oebb.at/bin/query.exe/en - OBB's routeplanner 'Scotty', which is in English.

I usually get hire cars fairly cheaply from Munich airport as well, it's an easy drive, about 2.5hrs I think at my fairly conservative speed? By the time you pay for train tickets then taxis for the 2 of you it may be cheaper to hire a car although the traffic in and out of Munich can be pretty bad.

You will have to change at München Ostbahnhof, or at the Hauptbahnhof (main station). The S-Bahn from the airport won't take you to Zell am See

zellmaniac, Direct as in collect luggage and go directly to the train station beneath the terminal building! As most are aware it is S-Bahn then normal trains and yes lots of changes possible or in fact none after the Ostbahnhof if you are lucky! Some go via Wörgl, some go via Salzburg. The Salzburg ones have fewer changes in m exprience. But the OP did not say WHEN they are landing/leaving, so I did not see the need to go into a long-winded explanation that may or may not be of any interest.
If the original poster had come back and asked for more information, then a link to the Deutsche Bahn/OEBB web site would have followed!

The Bad Armenian, Did you look at Jet2 from Edinburgh to Salzburg? Usually about the same price as London - Salzburg.

The Bad Armenian, if you want cheap, KLM Aberdeen (presumably Edinburgh and Glasgow too) - Amsterdam - Munich is usually a good option, painless, and adds maybe an hour tot he journey.
