Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Freestyle girls board questions...

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
So I'm aiming to get into flatland freestyle stuff due to not being a big fan of falling off things, and getting a bit bored of just going up and down hills. I want a new board, partly to help with this, but I also just want a new board Little Angel

I'm 5ft 6, a girl, size 6 feet, pretty standard build but 11st -ish and I currently use a Signal Vita Omni 147. I weigh a bit too much for such a short stick (5kg too much according to their stats), but it's a scream on the mountain and perfectly usable in the dome albeit *way* too fast. In terms of ability I'd consider myself pretty competant and generally only fall over when pushed or ambushed.

I'm pretty much set on a '13 Bataleon Feelbetter because I want to try the TBT profile and I believe a noodle is a good idea. I would ideally get the 149, however I can't find it anywhere for a decent price. I can only find the 152, which is obviously quite a bit longer than my usual steed but I'm smack in the middle of the weight range and I'm pretty adaptable and ride with a wide stance anyway so it doesn't bother me massively. It's probably about the length I should be on TBH. I can't really afford the '14 boards so I'm stuck with what's on offer.

Am I being a div? Is having a slightly longer board than perhaps I should have going to hinder me in progressing with messing around? Or should I stick with shorter boards that I'm a little too heavy for, or will that get in the way of progression as well?

I ride the Bataleon Violenza 13 and I LOVE IT! I am 5'8 so have never riden anything smaller than a 154 except when playing on my friends 149 Burton Lipstick - which I didnt like.

I am sure you would be fine going up a size.

ps Bataleon boards are quite frankly AWESOME

Do you use the Violenza indoors? What do you do on it? (That sounds like a personal question)

Mrs cad99uk - 5'3, 8st rides a Violenza 147.

Yep, used in a fridge but for nothing that involves leaving the ground Smile

Great for piste and powder though.

So, you should be OK on a 152.

I would demo a bataleon before buying. TBT isn't for everyone and I know I didn't like either the Goliath or the jam I tested.

Don't rule out non-ladies boards. I've got an Artifact Rocker and love it to bits, so much so that my Fate is pretty much redundant (I even tend to prefer it in the powder and not just messing about on piste, only time I prefer the Fate is for faster days on the piste as the Artifact is too soft really).

Sitter, To be fair I've matched up the mens board measurements against the womens ones and the only real difference is that the guys equivalent boards look a bit crap Wink

Gainz, I don't mind too much about not demoing TBT - I don't really want a board to make me ride better, I want one to challenge me to ride differently. It's a fair point though, and if I was paying full price I'd definitely want to try first. What didn't you like about them?

Nadenoodlee, the only way I can find it acceptable is to think of it as the gym, but more fun Wink

I think I may have talked myself into this...

call me dave, theres a FeelBetter 152 on SS20 for £210, just click 'buy'* and learn to monster it.

That's exactly the one I'm going to be emptying my wallet for. Frankly at that price it's rude not to. They have some other Bataleon boards at good prices too, if anybody else has the new toy itch and also thinks their 2014 graphics are crap Wink

As a terminal sufferer of the n+1 ideal quiver equation ("I'm on the snow a lot so it's TOTALLY worth it" "Who needs food this month, I need to diet anyway"), your bias is understood and appreciated Wink

What bindings are you teaming it with?

I've got two sets, Burton Stilettos and Union Milans. The Burtons are more comfortable, so I'll be using those for now. They're pretty good for going up and down the fridge, they've suited both the Vita and the Oh Yeah that's in the doghouse at the moment. I've got a feeling I'll end up building a set of Switchbacks from the sales next month, they've had pretty good Random People on the Internet reviews.

SS20 have got a decent price for that board at the moment as well. Presumably I didn't have to tell you that Wink

(ps. the 2014 ATV Slash by Gigi board had me at hello. Praying they do a shorter version of it than the 154 they did on the '13, though for my wallet's sake, I really hope they don't)

Just to follow up on this one, I did spring for the Feelbetter in the end, had a lovely drive to Oxford to fetch it, and a loooong session on it on sunday evening. It's a great board, especially for n00bs. Really flexible and fun but not mushy and unresponsive. It *does* ride shorter than it is, not quite like the 147s but it's definitely doesn't feel like a 152 which is a bit unexpected but great. The TBT profile is pretty flat compared to the all mountain boards so it doesn't really interfere with riding style or anything IMO. It felt reasonably secure on the icy bits and saved me at least 3 lazy edge-catch catapult moments at the bottom of the slope which my dignity appreciates and will probably make me extremely lazy. It has a lot of promise for messing about on too - before sunday I hadn't ever got (intentional) air. By the end of my session I was ollie-ing (ollying?) off anything and everything. The base is fast, but not stupidly fast or so slow you stop.

TL;DR top pre-season sale buy, especially if you're looking for something progressive for the fridge. Still going to be too much of a noodle to leave the all-mountain board at home next trip to the hills though.

Agree with Nadenoodlee, I take the bindings off the larger board, sheath it and put both boards in the same bag. I have two pretty different boards now so it's great to have the option depending on what I'm going to ride and the snow conditions, and will allow me to use my older board when learning park this winter Very Happy

Glad you are happy with your purchase!

Since I've only got one set of decent bindings (I fancy making up a set of Switchbacks next month if they're still in the sale though), it's going to have to work like that in the short term at least Wink I honestly think having a variation in boards keeps the riding experience fresh as well, especially when you're largely stuck on the same short slope in the UK or a reasonably small resort in the mountains too.

Had a small falling out with the board on Wednesday night, but that was down to riding too cautiously because Hemel let a couple of muppets who couldn't do a turn, let alone link them onto the main slope for the entire evening, and avoiding them was hard work rolling eyes

call me dave, I keep the same bindings to use on each - they fit my boots perfectly. I'd be more lkely to buy a new board than new bindings.
